As soon as I saw the specs (circa 2005).

Real Answer: When I put in my first HD-DVD, which was THE OMEGA MAN from 1971. Then WILLY WONKA, and FORBIDDEN PLANET, and I was truly blown away! Particularly, the *colors* were so much better than DVD's compressed colorspace of YUV 4:2:0.

The extra resolution was a given, but the improved colors is where HD really got me.

I wisely knew at the time to invest in a great-quality upconverting player. So, I lucked out getting the XA2 as a refurb for around $250 in early 2008. And, it makes my remaining DVDs look "pretty darn good."

August 7, 2001

I drove to Best Buy to watch the Cubs play the Rockies in their first ever HD broadcast on a 4:3 CRT HDTV. It amazed me how I could see every brick on the backstop and every person's face in the crowd!

I bought my PS3 in December of '06 and haven't bought a DVD since.

Blu-ray also has 4:2:0 color, unfortunately.

I appreciate your answers, thank you. I don't recall ever seeing demos or seeking them out when Blu-ray started to come out so it's particularly interesting to hear how often that arose for some of you.

Video is encoded on the disc in 4:2:0 format. Your Blu-ray player will convert that to 4:2:2 (or 4:4:4, or RGB, depending on your settings) upon output.
