Re: The X-Files series - coming 2013?
A while back it occurred to me that a new television series, called something like X-Files 2.0 or X-Files the Next Generation, could work.
The premise would be an adult Jordan Black teamed up with another (presumably) male partner. There are still quite a few loose ends from the old X-Files series like Gibson Praise, little Bill Mulder, etc., that could be spun off into something. David Duchovney could reprise his role as Mulder in a "Deep Throat" kind of capacity. Could also have people like Scully and Skinner show up. |

And if you're an X-files fan and not watching you're missing out. |
Re: The X-Files series - coming 2013?
Is that so? Maybe I'll have to add it to my queue on Netflix.

They did that and it's called Fringe. First season is basically X-Files 2.0 right down to the opening credits.

I agree with Corvin, the 1st season of Fringe is pretty much X-Files 2.0. It actually got really criticized in the TV forum by the X-Files nuts who thought it was a rip-off. But staying on topic, I would only get a BD release if there are more extras, the price was good and they upgraded the 1st couple of seasons from 4:3 to 16:9 |

I was a big fan of The X-Files, and definitely got the same vibe from Fringe at the beginning. It's taken on its own character in the last few seasons, though.

Don't shoot the messenger, OK guys? :)
The collected wisdom from the various boards and forums is that Carter, Duchovny and Anderson want to make at least one more serious X-Files movie and preferably more than one, only Fox continue to say no. There was hope that with Rothman out things would change on that score but now it doesn't seem so likely. Instead the studio wants to talk about a reboot with a prettier cast and an emphasis on relationships. Fox want to reduce costs - and sfx and cgi cost. Soaps are cheap to make and are cash machines. Carter isn't interested in that and won't co-operate in a reboot, but there was talk of a spoof after any third movie was made. Anderson is on record as saying she is eager to do a spoof of the show. (Google it. I can't post external links here because my post count is below 30.) The belief now is that since the studio bosses have no interest in The X-Files as it was and probably won't make any more serious X-Files movies, Carter is focused on a spoof. But Fox still own the rights so it's anybody's guess how it's going to end. Like I say, none of this comes from press releases, so don't shoot at me. :) |

One of the best tv shows ever made.
I wonder how good it can look in blu? |

The only way to get shit moving would be a serious grassroots fan movement a la Star Trek to get them to greenlight another go. But this time, instead of a small, dark, depressing serial killer drama improperly released during the summer, they need to go big and make it tentpole release. A reboot movie with a younger cast will be a dead end. It will suck. The beauty of the show was the long-simmering tension between Mulder and Scully. The sad thing is Carter may have killed the franchise's long-term prospects by letting Mulder and Scully finally become a couple. No more tantalizing sexual tension. They need to really reinvent their relationship (maybe a play on couple chemistry, a la Thin Man). Rebooting it into another Twilight will make it suck hard. |

Unfortunately, the show fell apart at the end of Season 4, and threw away its entire mythology and anything good it had ever accomplished for the current flaming crapfest of a final season.

Re: The X-Files series - coming 2013?
Not to turn this into a Fringe discussion but the end of Season four was ALL about the mythology and all the good things that show accomplished. It had an almost air tight arc that called back episode for episode to the first season. Something X-Files never really was able to pull off.

Re: The X-Files series - coming 2013?
If written correctly maybe Fox and Carter could compromise.
A third movie that worked as a back-door pilot for a spin-off/reboot series could work. A new pair could be sent after Mulder and Scully for some reason and get sucked into a case that (possibly temporarily) puts a cap on the mythology of the original series and leaves nothing much for Mulder and Scully to do with the original series and leaves the new pair to work on cases into a new series. It wouldn't necessarily require anyone to watch the new series, and if Fox wanted to, they could just make sure that they have the TV rights to the film and be able to show it (possibly cut into a 2-part pilot) on TV if the series gets greenlit. I'd see the film and maybe continue with the new series if there was good chemistry between the new characters. Hell, I never had a problem with Robert Patrick and what's her name in the final few seasons. Honestly, at that point in the series it was pretty obvious that Duchovny wanted nothing to do with the series anymore and was really boring and lackluster to watch. I was excited for new blood. It was just too late in the series to rejuvinate what it had become, yet the actors got all the blame. And, speaking of Fringe, I tried to watch it the first year and really found all of the main cast hard to watch, especially the old guy (I've already forgotten his name). He was way too over-the-top like some bad cartoon stereotype of an eccentric scientist... |

Don't get me started on the current season, which blatantly contradicts everything the previous four seasons ever told us about the Observers, and has just thrown out all of the mythology about the alternate universe as if it was never important. Fringe is following the exact same arc as The X-Files, just in fewer seasons. |
Re: The X-Files series - coming 2013?
TXF is un-TNG-able. In the eyes of most viewers it was all about the chemistry between DD and GA. They already tried to put new agents in with Doggett/Reyes. I'm a huge Doggett/Reyes apologist and I think eventually people are going to realize that the quality of acting and writing was more consistent through the end of the show than most have ever admitted. They had the creator of "Breaking Bad" writing and producing through the end for fuck's sake.
But it doesn't matter. People don't mind seeing Law & Order, Star Trek and CSI spun off and franchised but the DD/GA pairing was a lightning strike that won't happen again, and what was there was killed when they removed the tension and got them together. You can analyze casting and writing all you want but there's an undeniable correlation between the seasons people like and the state of Mulder/Scully shipdom. It's frustrating to me that we aren't nearing season 20 of TXF with the 3rd or 4th team of agents investigating and to suggest there isn't 20 years worth of material to mine for cryptozoology and conspiracies and supernatural nonsense is ridiculous. More than any other television franchise TXF is a victim of its own success. |

Am I the only one who liked the Scully/Mulder relationship aspects of 'I Want to Believe'? I enjoyed the fact that they had settled in comfortably together, like an old married couple. That felt right to me.

It's too bad they didn't figure out the guy was a Cylon - that could have brought back some of the sci-fi element.

Re: The X-Files series - coming 2013?
I don't know why people want another X-Files movie, it's a great TV show that's gone 0-for-2 in theatrical films, in terms of being enjoyable viewing - just let it live on TV, that's where most of the strongest storytelling is these days anyway.
I'd definitely be up for a new X-Files series (or even miniseries), as long as it was continuous with the history of the 90s (and I guess Millennium too?). As in, all the stuff we saw happen in the original series happened during that time, and so Mulder could be out hiding in a shack in Montana or something, Scully being a doctor, so they could make appearances if they wanted to, but obviously have new characters take charge of the main stories. I also think having Mulder and Scully get together and be happy about it was one of the things that killed the show, only way to add some life to that is probably to get them to divorce and be cheerfully bitter about the whole thing. Bickering ex's. |
Re: The X-Files series - coming 2013?
I disagree with 0-for-2. I thought Fight the Future was great. I think they missed their opportunity to transition to movies only at that point. The show already had five seasons when FTF came out, and the move was kind of an epic conclusion to things up to that point. I think a new movie every 2-3 years moving along the conspiracy plot would have been much better than what we got in seasons 6-9.
