To 3D or not to 3D
 

I don't have a 3D TV. I own exactly one 3D movie (Avengers) and that is because it was the same price as the normal release. I have no plans to "upgrade" anything I already own but I'm wondering if I should buy 3D versions of new releases. I've looked around and honestly can't tell if 3D is taking off or not. So is it smart to go with the 3D version or is it just a waste of money?

3D is cool. I like it but hardly a necessity. If the 3D version is $5 more than the 2D counterpart than I'll grab it - $10 or $15 dollars more then..HELL NO.

I think you'll get varying opinions on it. My personal opinion is that it's a waste of money. The only movie I've seen where I thought the 3D actually added to the experience rather than detracted from it was Prometheus. In all other cases I've found the 3D effect itself mostly distracting and the relative darkness of the image frustrating.

Well for me...I'm not buying a 3D TV till the tech fits my preferences and comfortable price range. Also...I'd also argue that a very small number of movies actually deserve 3D.

Were I to buy a 3D BD at this moment? It'd have to go down in price. Prometheus sure as fuck is worth the $19.99 for the 3D edition..also...shit ton of features. So Price and actually quality of the 3D is a huge factor. I'd wait till whatever 3D movies you want go down in price. Most aren't worth it.

I dunno - did you see is as a waste if both 3D and non-3D are the same price? You did once already. More importantly, do you have any plans on getting a 3D TV? Not sure what you're going after here.

Generally the 3D version is only a few dollars more ($5-ish) so makes sense to me to get the 3D version. I don't have 3D yet but I know I will on the next TV upgrade (within the next year or two).

Seem like most high quality TVs come with 3D nowdays but I'm still happy with my old 73" Mits. So yeah, I'll have 3D someday but I'm in no hurry. OTOH it might be smart to buy 3D versions of movies now at nominal extra cost if the format is taking off. Is it?

I only own two 3D Blu-rays:
Prometheus: because of the special features that aren't included in the 2D release.
Hugo: because it was the exact same price as the 2D when I bought it.

Dial M for Murder is one that I'm interested in seeing in 3D at some point in my life...

My new Blu-ray player (when it arrives) is 3D capable, but I'm in absolutely no rush to buy a 3D TV or projector. If/when my PJ dies, I'll consider it, but it won't be a deciding factor.

I love it and so far have been impressed. My only regret is not having a bigger set. I saw Prometheus in 3D last week and it was stunning. I thought Transformers:DotM in 3D was just great. One of the best was the animated Tangled and I caught that on Starz 3D channel. Haven't got around to Avengers, Hugo (heard it's almost reference quality) and Underworld: Awkening.

One note as well....depending on the set and player some movies actually do "2D to 3D" pretty decent.

If you like 3D, then buy it! There's a few 3D movies I'd like to get that are priced too high, but I'm not going to settle for the 2D version at a lower price, I'll just wait til the 3D price drops. Not everyone can see or appreciate 3D, but I love it. Some people however can't see the difference between blu-ray and regular DVD!

wtf? Why would you say that at that time? I understand 3D. It's not needed..but HD actually gets you closer to the quality of film. It would seem like a positive evolution for media format.

I'm starting to have the philosophy that it's better to have 3D now than buy the 2D and decide you want the 3D later.

If you're one of those people who is constantly obsessed with what your collection is 'worth', they maybe not. But if you enjoy an alternative experience that drops you in the middle of the movie, then yeah.

I bought a 3D TV because it was built into the TV I wanted, but I discovered that watching movies in 3D is a wholly different experience than watching in 2D. I don't really give a crap if it's taking off or is worth anything, it's just fun to be able to watch movies this way at home.

I have an HDTV that does 3D but normally I don't buy titles in 3D. I only have like four or five titles in 3D that I bought right when I first got the television. I realized pretty early on that it wasn't worth the extra cash. I suppose if there was a 3D Blu-ray of a movie I wanted for the same price or only slightly more than the standard version I'd go for it.

I have no interest in 3D and never will since I don't care for the effect so I voted no. But if you like it and think it adds to your movie watching experience, then sure, buy into it.

The next TV I buy will likely have 3D capabilities, but only because I don't plan on buying a new TV very soon and I imagine the price will come down significantly by the time I do.

I own Avengers in 3D now (trying to sell it) only b/c I got the Target exclusive, but I only have an interest in seeing films how they were intended to be seen, so aside from Dial M for Murder and Hugo, I don't think even with a 3D TV, I would be buying much 3D fare aside from that which was shot using 3D cameras or otherwise intended to be seen in 3D by its director.

I also got the Avengers 3D. For the couple 3D's I've seen in the theaters I didn't really care for them. I saw Spiderman and didn't see a need for 3D and one of the Resident Evils. Kind of annoying actually.

If you plan on upgrading your set with a 3D one, then I would think buying 3D movies now would be good preparation. It was for me, and while I bought very few before my TV upgrade, now I'm willing to spend no more than $5 more than the regular blu sets. Of course many 3D blus have gone on sale for $15. I could care less about the whole "if must be conceived by the director in 3D" or anything of the like, mostly because my daughter likes it, and I like the aspect of 3D viewing - at home only. I have fun watching them at home than in a theater, and it's more effective for me. Some movies not conceived in 3D have been more or less good on the conversion. And I'm also really excited to see Pacific Rim in 3D at home next year.

I only enjoy 3D for animated films. The few I own on disc are Christmas Carol, Nightmare Before Christmas, Legend of the Guardians, & How to Train Your Dragon. They're fun but I could certainly live without it.

The only 2 movies I've seen where I felt 3D added to the experience was Hugo and Prometheus. Not worthy of a full system upgrade -- especially with the technology/price in place today for home systems.

I don't bother with 3D in the theaters, but I really enjoy it at home. For some reason, 3D looks better on a TV than in the theaters. I don't want everything to be 3D but I enjoy a number of films that have effectively used it. The Creature from the Black Lagoon was fantastic. Hugo was great. A concert film I have in 3D was also quite cool. I didn't feel the 3D in Prometheus added to that film but it did look nice. This may be heresy to say but I really prefer 3D as a gimmick. I want the stuff to pop out when watching it. To add 3D to a serious film is a waste and a detriment in my book as it will only detract, but for popcorn fare it's great.
