Most of Criterion's scholar commentaries are kind of dull. They usually have interesting information, but they have a tendency to sound like lecturing college professors. Commentaries are more fun with some spice, like hearing Sam Raimi mock the errors in his own movies in the Evil Dead one. Mostow on the third Terminator film is kind of dull, though Arnold sounds like new having fun. It's especially guiling when they try to have a directs who has English as a second language like John Woo, whose accent is impenetrable. Any Guillermo del Toro commentaries are gold, his one win Peter Frankfurt is especially hilarious.

"He missed being killed on that shot by literally a quarter of an inch."
"Needless to say, I wanted another take!"

"I really love the CG work here, except in two shots, which I will point out, because I fucking hate them"

"It's Sneezy, Dopey, Bashful, and Rasputin!"

I can't believe no one has mentioned Kevin Smith & Raimi/Campbell for best. Also the Armageddon commentary. I also loved Cameron Crowe's commentary with his mother on Almost Famous.

There's a ton of bad ones though.

The one on Drive Angry was really bad, mostly because the director was sick and his voice was just annoying to listen to. Turned it off within five minutes.

Richard Schickel and Peter Bogdonovich belong on any worst list - both insufferable, pompous bores.
On the other hand, Greg Mank on Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein and Island of Lost Souls are top notch.

I usually find them very good, and I don't mind being lectured to by college professors but the M guys are tedious. They actually have some great information about the film and how it tied into what was then a very current serial killer case in Germany. I never realized M was so "ripped from the headlines". But then that's it. They literally retell this anecdote at least 5 different ways and they take turns repeating it and every time something in the film can be linked to it they point it out at considerable repetitive length.

Anything with Milla Jovovich. The commentary she does with her dogs on UltraViolet is beyond insufferable. She spends the whole track exclaiming how "rad!" every scene is.

In theory, the idea of Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez getting blitzed and doing a drunken commentary on Resident Evil sounds like it ought to be entertaining, but it so isn't. At all.

I don't mind people dispensing information, I think that Bey Logan's commentaries, for instance, are fun (my feeling about his association with Weinstein butchery not withstanding), but he's always willing to point out plot holes, obvious errors, etc. He's fun and not self-important, so he takes time to criticize Jet Li Lian-Jie's black slacks and white socks .

Her dogs? She does the commentary with her dogs?

Yes, two of them.
