James Dean's films heading to Blu!

Beginning in January, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group (WBHEG) will launch a major Anniversary initiative that will continue through year-end 2013. This includes the release of seven new collections, including two limited and numbered anniversary collections -- 100 films on DVD and 50 films on Blu-ray™, both the largest collections of films ever released, to date, in their respective formats. The year-long celebration will also include several stand-alone releases of new-to-format classics on Blu-ray™ for the first time, including The Jazz Singer, all three James Dean films (East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause, Giant), Cabaret and Academy Award® Best Picture Winners Grand Hotel (1932), Mrs. Miniver (1943), and Driving Miss Daisy(1990).

Some exciting news in there. Hopefully Cabaret finally gets a really good release.

I saw some info posted on blu-ray.com about the 50-film collection. All of the films in it are either currently available separately or will be as part of the anniversary celebration.

Giant was never anamorphic on DVD, correct?

I'm so in for Cabaret, holy shit. I love that movie, and I love laserdisc, but I'd sure be glad to retire my laserdisc of that movie.

Cabaret is long overdue. I finally saw Giant when it came out on DVD, so maybe now I'll finally get around to seeing East of Eden. I saw Rebel with a Cause on a big screen in college.

The 2001 wasn't anamorphic either. Quote from the packaging:

"Widescreen version presented in a "matted" widescreen format preserving the 1.66:1 aspect ratio of its original theatrical exhibition."

Wish they would've used actual movie/poster art instead of these covers that look like "James Dean modeling shoot", but whatever, I'm only getting Giant.

Re: James Dean's films heading to Blu!

Are there any exclusive extras for the big box set? I would prefer the digibooks but might end up ordering the cheaper and smaller-sized UK box set if it has exclusives.

Re: James Dean's films heading to Blu!

Will want to have these in individual cases for shelving/organization purposes, so hopefully the prices on the digibooks are reasonable or there is a cheaper UK alternative.

Re: James Dean's films heading to Blu!

ProfessorEcho posted this in the bargains section. Amazon UK has this set up for presale for about half the price as the US set.

Giant is a James Dean film? I always considered it a Taylor film more for some reason...

Anybody seen definitive specs?

Has anyone heard what the "disc differences" are between the "James Dean Ultimate Collector's Edition (Blu-ray)" and the three individual movies?

Here is why I am asking:

UCE: high def digest says the UCE has 9 discs ( 6 blu and 3 dvd), but amazon says the UCE has 7 discs.

Giant: amazon says that "Giant" has 3 discs , but high def digest doesn't indicate the number of discs.

East of Eden: amazon says that "East of Eden" has 1 disc, but high def digest doesn't indicate the number of discs.

Rebel Without a Cause: amazon says that "Rebel" has 1 disc, but high def digest doesn't indicate the number of discs.

One of my favorite "blu-ray review" sites, http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=11780 says that the UCE has 7 discs, but doesn't indicate the number of discs for the individual releases.

However, it looks like ( from the blu-ray site and the high def digest comes with three DVDs that can be purchased separately from amazon:

>>

So, my basic questions: do you know if the "James Dean Ultimate Collector's Edition (Blu-ray)" has 7 discs or 9 discs? If I bought the three individual blu-ray digibook editions, then what disc content would I be missing? I am guessing the three DVD documentaries ( listed above that can be purchased from amazon ) , but is there any other disc content that would be in the UCE that is not in the three individual releases?

thanks!
