Fox to release movies as digital HD downloads three weeks before BD/DVD
From a New York Times article a few days ago:
Fox to Offer Digital Movies Closer to Theatrical Release Fox is about to pry open the window for digital film sales. Beginning later this month with Ridley Scott’s science fiction thriller “Prometheus,” the studio plans to offer high-definition versions of its films for sale at newly lowered prices about three weeks before making the movies available on discs and through video-on-demand services, studio executives said in interviews... I haven't paid much attention to the technology but I wonder how they prevent piracy and purchased movies from being shared? This would seem to increase the incentive to do so. |
Re: Fox to release movies as digital HD downloads three weeks before BD/DVD
No. If I'm buying a film I plan to keep, I want a physical copy.

Re: Fox to release movies as digital HD downloads three weeks before BD/DVD
Same. Physical copy.

Re: Fox to release movies as digital HD downloads three weeks before BD/DVD
So that boils down to what, about one month after theatrical releases?
|
Re: Fox to release movies as digital HD downloads three weeks before BD/DVD

Re: Fox to release movies as digital HD downloads three weeks before BD/DVD
Fuck em. Then the release date for me is 3 weeks after this garbage. They want to see how many really want to do download only? They're about to find out.

Re: Fox to release movies as digital HD downloads three weeks before BD/DVD
Wake me up when it's three weeks after the theatrical release.

Re: Fox to release movies as digital HD downloads three weeks before BD/DVD
There are so many "if's" related to this...
If I had a home theater pc... If it has lossless audio...etc. That's why I don't download anything now. Physical copies offer so much more. |

Re: Fox to release movies as digital HD downloads three weeks before BD/DVD
If I could RENT it three weeks before release, I'd be interested...but I'm like most here - I prefer the superior A/V and bonus materials of the physical copy.

Re: Fox to release movies as digital HD downloads three weeks before BD/DVD
I have more shelf space than hard-drive space.

I wouldn't pay $1 to do it. |
Re: Fox to release movies as digital HD downloads three weeks before BD/DVD
No thanks. If they EVER decide to release downloads only, I will never buy another movie.

Re: Fox to release movies as digital HD downloads three weeks before BD/DVD
Are you kidding? You just know the "digital download" version will be inferior in every way to the released BD! The bitrate will probably be 1/2 to 1/4 that of the encoded disc. The DRM will be more prominent. The digital download will probably 'expire' and / or become 'revoked' at Fox's whim, for any reason whatsoever (eg, a shooting in a theatre, rights issue, ad naseum)
Terrible slippery slope in this decision, folks. Don't support it! |
Re: Fox to release movies as digital HD downloads three weeks before BD/DVD
LOL not even considering doing this.

not interested in this.

Re: Fox to release movies as digital HD downloads three weeks before BD/DVD
I'll continue to wait for a good price on the physical copies.

Re: Fox to release movies as digital HD downloads three weeks before BD/DVD
I know some smaller distributors such as Mongrel Films are actually releasing some of their titles on-demand a week or two before the theatrical release to help generate some buzz.
I can't see the larger studios using this approach. |
