Yeah according to that picture of the standard UK set, it looks identical to the coffin set other than the exterior case. I was under the impression that the disc holders were better or some other shit, but it looks like the only thing the coffin does is take up some more shelf space. I have everything that the standard set has and nothing more. Had I known this I would have saved a few bucks and some space on my movie shelf, and went with the standard set. It's like paying more for a blu-ray with a slipcover- which I guess some people are ok with.

I've never used bookmarks either. I treat watching movies at home just like going to a theater; I make sure I have the time allotted. If something unforeseen occurs, that's what chapter stops are for.

I forward it back to where I left off. Takes but a second.

You remember where you left off. I rarely use a bookmark. Only if I know it's going to be a while for me to get back to it.

I just messed w/ the bookmarks on the disc cuz the set up was a wee bit different from the US set ups that Universal has. I wonder if UK Universal fucked up that set up. It doesn't faze me in any way cuz these films are fucking short but I would like to know how the bookmarks work on these discs cuz it's weird.

Made some custom covers for these discs. Are these great? No. But they serve my needs, combining the available blu discs from the Universal Monster set just released, with the DVD legacy releases of the sequels...

Creature from the Black Lagoon set

The Mummy set

The Invisible Man set

Frankenstein + Bride of Frankenstein set

I have yet to see this set in a B&M store. In fairness I've only checked my local Best Buy, Target and Costco. I would have expected these stores to put it on an end cap to tie in with Halloween.

Best Buy isn't carrying it in-store, and I assume it's the same for the others.

Do you know why by any chance? They carry tons of stuff, from awful crap to Criterion BDs. Why wouldn't they carry at least a few copies of this set?

Barnes & Noble carries the set. Priced at only $159.99. FYE might be the only other place that would have this.

I like them for their pop art look.

I may grab them in the future if I decide to store my discs along with the previous DVDs (just need to buy the empty blu cases).

Thanks for the share!

Just to follow up, I found this set at another local Costco for under $100 and bit on it.

I got the UK set and love it, especially A-B comparing it with the DVD set I own (like night and day). I just wish I would have waited for the Black Friday sales to pick this up, as it never occurred to me that they would discount it so soon. Ditto for the Bond 50 set.

Are the movies in the UK set closed-captioned? According to listing at amazon.co.uk they're not, but hoping someone in this thread can verify before I pull the trigger.

Re: Classic Monster Collection from Universal - 10/2/12

Isn't it Universal who places the subtitles directly below the person who is speaking, as opposed to across the middle?

The only store I've seen them that locally is Fry's Electronics. When I was there the day after X-Mas, they had a ton of them.

I finally picked up the UK set for around $44-45 shipped. Just have to wait for it to show up in the mail

Re: Classic Monster Collection from Universal - 10/2/12

I got the US set during B&N's 40% off sale. After coupons and membership discount, it was about $60. The book packaging is very nice and slick. The design looks closer to what they used for the Indy set.

Re: Classic Monster Collection from Universal - 10/2/12

Some news on individual releases. Universal is releasing in 2 waves. Wave 1 has single versions of The Mummy (1932), The Invisible Man (1933), Phantom of the Opera (1943) and Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), due on June 4. The other 4 are planned for sometime near Halloween.

Hopefully this means a Wave 3 of the sequels will arrive sometime next year.

Pre-orders for the first wave are up on Amazon. They have a list price of $22.98 each.

Re: Classic Monster Collection from Universal - 10/2/12

i keep reading reviews that 2d version of COTBL is defective -even with replacement discs. Is this just for the UK version? or are people in the US having the same problems?
