Masters of the Universe (1987) - 10/2/12

From blu-ray.com:

Warner Home Entertainment will bring Masters of the Universe to Blu-ray in the fall. This live-action adaptation of the popular children's cartoon stars Dolph Lundgren (The Expendables) as He-Man, a warrior prince who must combat the evil Skeletor (Frank Langella, Frost/Nixon).

While trying to stop Skeletor from conquering the planet of Eternia, He-Man finds himself accidentally transported to present-day California. With the help of his brilliant troll sidekick Gwildor (Billy Barty, Legend) and a teenage waitress (Courteney Cox, Scream), He-Man tries to find a way back home, but his progress is stunted by Skeletor's minions, who have managed to follow He-Man to Earth.

The technical and supplementary specifications are still unknown for this Blu-ray, which Warner is marketing as a 25th Anniversary Edition.

Masters of the Universe streets on October 2nd.

The definition of guilty pleasure. I'm definitely buying this, no question.

Saw this at www.bluray.com and wasn't sure if it was real or fan made. Looks good though!

If the extras are worthwhile then I might pick this one up.

If the price is right, I'll pick this one up.

I still remember seeing this in the theater as a kid.

Well, I guess this is because of me.

I just bought the DVD a couple weeks ago thinking it would be along time before it was released on Blu-ray.

Finally! I've been waiting for this one!

I hope they record new interviews with Frank Langella and Dolph Lundgren:

Langella really gave his all in that role:

Looking forward to it, total nostalgia purchase.

It'd be nice if they included this:

Can't believe we're going to have 4 Transformers, 2 GI:Joes....and still no new MOTU!

Luckily this is Warner Brothers and not Buena Vista given the latter's treatment on anniversary editions...

Anyway, can't wait, I actually saw this in theaters when I was 6 or 7.

Re: Masters of the Universe (1987) - 10/2/12

I wonder if this might also include the director's cut Gary Goddard wanted to put together. Apparently in his original cut the farewell sequence was a bit more fleshed out and there were no cutaways when Skeletor became a god (Goddard felt Frank Langella's performance was so strong that the scene should have remained totally fixed on him). I would be interesting as a companion to the theatrical cut.

It would be awesome if it had a director's cut. But I doubt it, and will take what we get. I would kill for a real MOTU movie, but they would end up bringing all the shit to earth again.

Warner Brothers doesn't spend money on non-premium catalog releases sadly. According to blu-ray.com the only special features we can expect are the theatrical trailers and the post-credits sequence that originally set up the sequel that was never filmed.

A year or so ago Latino Film Review wrote a review about MOTU screenplay called Greyskull: Masters of the Universe that had a very epic take on the source material. From their review, it sounded like it would have made for a fantastic movie. Sadly, Mattel axed it because they wanted something more kiddie. No movement on the reboot movie has been made since.

Not even the documentary that was already made?

Man, how many times has the word "guilty pleasure" been slung around this thread?

Anyway, this is a big nostalgia-driven guilty pleasure of mine ( ), so I'll be picking it up when it hits the inexpensive racks.

The post-credits sequence (I dare call it a sequence, as it's less than a few seconds) is NOT a bonus...it was part of the theatrical version.

Yeah, that's always been part of the movie. Theatrically, on VHS, and on DVD. It's always been part of the movie.

Yeah, this info about the sparse features on the BD doesn't jive at all. They have all this material. Why not use it?
