Nice. Is there anyone really upset that the 2002 version isn't being included? I couldn't care less.

What about the *other* deleted scenes? Like the one with Harrison Ford as Elliot's principal.

Re: E.T. coming Fall 2012
I also agree but I'd rather have something extra that exists, rather than nothing. It's a unique piece of history that can be pulled out to show how dumb things were at the time. I'm speaking of the Holiday Special and the edited ET.
|
Re: E.T. coming Fall 2012
The leaked list of Universal titles has been very accurate so far. They have 10/23 as the release date. That's probably correct.
|
Re: E.T. coming Fall 2012
Personally I'm a little sad to have to go back to the original E.T. chase in the woods. I liked the run cycle they gave him in the 2002 version. It was more dramatic.
The original always looked like a puppet on a skateboard being pulled through the grass. :/ |

That's one I agree on George with...it's awful. Not even fun in a "oh my god that's bad" kind of way. The best part of it - the Boba Fett cartoon - is on the new Star Wars Blu-ray anyway.
It was at one point uploaded on Youtube complete with the original commercials that aired during it. And let me say the commercials were far more entertaining than the special itself which was grueling to get through! I couldn't believe how dull and awful it was, and truly was a torturous experience viewing the entire thing. I had hoped it would at least deliver some camp value entertainment and it didn't even come close to that. Now maybe it could be included as an extra feature on a Star Wars release, or even included on it's own for those who want it. But I'm not losing sleep over it's lack of release after suffering through viewing it. "The horror, the horror." In regards to E.T., it's great Spielberg has seen the light and the original version is being released intact. There is nothing worse than a "SE" version of a film replacing the original and pretending it doesn't exist. Now technically all versions of a film should be released and made available for those who want them in my opinion. But if only one version is being released, then it should be the original version above all else. And for the past decade the 2002 E.T. did replace the original by being the sole version available for purchase and airing on t.v. That I really disagreed with and I'm glad that mistake is being corrected. However it is an unfortunate part of the films history and may even have it's fans, so it should be available as well. But since my preferred version of the film is being released intact. I'm happy considering it looked like the original was vanishing from existence since the 2002 release. :) |

I agree. The legend of the Star Wars Holiday Special is more interesting than the actual special itself, and keeping it unreleased only fuels the mystique about it. Then those who do stumble across a copy and view it, discover something so horrible(and boring), it defies description and was best left unseen.

Re: E.T. coming Fall 2012
The 2002 edition is terrible but it's a significant chapter in the history of the movie and it should be included. Even the biggest ET '02 hater would also agree that the alternate audio track of the live score makes it worth including.
Showing the inside of the mother ship in the Special Edition of Close Encounters is a greater sin than anything in ET '02 (and I know Columbia would only give Spielberg the money for new scenes if that was one of them) but I'm glad I have the option of watching it even if it's little more than a curiosity sandwiched between two valid presentations of the film. Hopefully some retailer will get it as a bonus disc or something. If not I still have that fancy DVD box set that I was gonna keep anyway. Ultimately having it in SD only is far from a crisis. But having it in HD with lossless audio on the live score would be better. |
Re: E.T. coming Fall 2012
Even though I don't give a shit about the 02 version, but I think I'll keep my DVD as well as buy the BD. Just so I have the reference to the horrid changes.

Really? I was under the impression that once the 2 dvd LE went out of print. The 1 disc release featured just the 2002 version using disc 1 from the LE set. That was my guess since it only listed the running time of the 2002 version and no mention on the package of containing the original theatrical version. And that's the main version I see in stores currently.

Re: E.T. coming Fall 2012
Keeping my giftset DVD but I can't wait to get my hands on ET in HD. Sounds like it will be a great release.

Re: E.T. coming Fall 2012
That space ship is pretty cool but not worth the price IMO. I would have prefered a walkie talkie special edition packaging.
|
Re: E.T. coming Fall 2012
Yeah...that spaceship looks like shit.
|
Re: E.T. coming Fall 2012
Another vote for the spaceship looking like a piece of junk...but I DO hope we get a digibook - maybe another BB exclusive? (Like Jaws)
|
Re: E.T. coming Fall 2012
Yeah the space ship looks pretty meh to me. Wouldn't pay the extra price or have it take up the extra shelf space personally. I'm still holding out on a digibook too as it's easily the best gimmick packaging if you ask me. Not a really big fan of steelbooks personally.

Re: E.T. coming Fall 2012
A steelbook or special case that would be really cool would be a Speak And Spell case. That toy was a pretty big part of the movie, after all. Or Maybe a box that looks like a package of Reese's Pieces...

I still have my limited edition Laser Disk (only 5000 made) of ET and still looks really good.

Re: E.T. coming Fall 2012
The E.T. facebook page confirmed that the steelbook will be available at Target stores, in limited quantities.
