Hell no, they can launch my DVD edition with the shitty packaging to space for all I care. I'm plum happy with the original verision only on blu.

This is a definite buy for me. Been holding out on the DVD in preparation of its release.

Good to see it carrying most of the bonus material from the three-disc ultimate gift set.

The only materials it's missing are:
  • 20th Anniversary version of the film.
  • Introduction by Steven Spielberg.
  • "2002 World Premiere" isolated score with John Williams in Dolby Digital 5.1
  • Space Exploration audio track.

While the live isolated score was a great bonus feature, I won't miss the redone version nor the Space Exploration track.

This is a glorious case where a director refuses to re-release his director's cut because he botched it up. All I can say is THANKS Steven! I'm assuming the two scenes from the 2002 version are the Halloween footage and the E.T. bathtub footage.

Guess I'll be keeping my DVD copy as well. Can't wait for this to be released on BD!

A New Hope with Greedo shooting first is still in that cupboard ;) Otherwise, yes there is not really anything left that IMO that is on my MUST HAVE either that has not been announced.

Eh..I'd prefer if case was blue rather than white. Plus I don't like steelbooks all that much anyways.

I understand the main feature will be the 1982 theatrical cut (take notes George Lucas). There will be the two added scenes from 2002. Will the full 2002 cut be included too?

The specs mentioned only the 1982 THEATRICAL edition was being included.

Yup, the score track is nice. I'll hang onto my DVD set for that. Overall, I'm very pleased with the extras that are being offered.

Nice. Is there anyone really upset that the 2002 version isn't being included? I couldn't care less.

I only care as a completest. There really isn't a reason they couldn't have included it.

That version doesn't exist anymore, according to Steven. It's his way of trying to make a point with his buddy George.

Not a bit. Hated the "improvements". Tossing mediocre CGI onto a live-action movie that never had it before is very jarring.

What about the *other* deleted scenes? Like the one with Harrison Ford as Elliot's principal.

I'm pretty sure we'll never see those, although I suppose it's possible there's some footage in the featurettes.

That's just more ammo for George to never release the Holiday Special

That's one I agree on George with...it's awful. Not even fun in a "oh my god that's bad" kind of way. The best part of it - the Boba Fett cartoon - is on the new Star Wars Blu-ray anyway.

I also agree but I'd rather have something extra that exists, rather than nothing. It's a unique piece of history that can be pulled out to show how dumb things were at the time. I'm speaking of the Holiday Special and the edited ET.

The leaked list of Universal titles has been very accurate so far. They have 10/23 as the release date. That's probably correct.

Personally I'm a little sad to have to go back to the original E.T. chase in the woods. I liked the run cycle they gave him in the 2002 version. It was more dramatic.

The original always looked like a puppet on a skateboard being pulled through the grass. :/

I agree. The legend of the Star Wars Holiday Special is more interesting than the actual special itself, and keeping it unreleased only fuels the mystique about it. Then those who do stumble across a copy and view it, discover something so horrible(and boring), it defies description and was best left unseen.

It was at one point uploaded on Youtube complete with the original commercials that aired during it. And let me say the commercials were far more entertaining than the special itself which was grueling to get through! I couldn't believe how dull and awful it was, and truly was a torturous experience viewing the entire thing. I had hoped it would at least deliver some camp value entertainment and it didn't even come close to that. Now maybe it could be included as an extra feature on a Star Wars release, or even included on it's own for those who want it. But I'm not losing sleep over it's lack of release after suffering through viewing it. "The horror, the horror."

In regards to E.T., it's great Spielberg has seen the light and the original version is being released intact. There is nothing worse than a "SE" version of a film replacing the original and pretending it doesn't exist. Now technically all versions of a film should be released and made available for those who want them in my opinion. But if only one version is being released, then it should be the original version above all else. And for the past decade the 2002 E.T. did replace the original by being the sole version available for purchase and airing on t.v. That I really disagreed with and I'm glad that mistake is being corrected.
However it is an unfortunate part of the films history and may even have it's fans, so it should be available as well. But since my preferred version of the film is being released intact. I'm happy considering it looked like the original was vanishing from existence since the 2002 release. :)
