Cirque du Soleil: Journey of Man

This was released on June 7th:

This was on my most-wanted list for Blu-ray, and a good price, so I picked it up.

Amazon says: "This Blu-ray disc will display only in 2D without special hardware. To watch this movie in Blu-ray 3D, you will need a 3D-capable television that comes with active-shutter glasses and a 3D-capable Blu-ray player. "

I don't have a 3D player yet, but not even the 2-D version would play in my Sony BDP-S760. It came up with some "Unknown Disc" error. I do not see a separate 2D Blu version of this available yet. I contacted Sony about the disc not playing the 2D version, but got their usual form response. Sony makes the disc and Sony makes my player, so maybe a future firmware version will let the 2D version load up. I will hang onto the 3D version for future expansion and bringing over to friends' homes.

that's strange because my copy could playback the 2D version - as for the 2D version, it's light years better than the DVD edition, which was one of the worst transfers Sony ever did.

Ok, so possibly Sony needs to update the firmware on my player to play its own disc.
Yours was a 2D player, correct?

2D and 3D worked on my Samsung 6900. I tested them both a few weeks back.

I got a replacement copy at the store and it works like a charm. There were several comments on Amazon and AVS forum about this not working for various people, so there must be a bad batch out there.

Re: Cirque du Soleil: Journey of Man

Bought this last week at BestBuy and watched it O.K. in 2-D but can't seem to get the 3-D option to play. Keeps saying I need a 3-D capable TV and player no matter what I put the settings on. I have a Samsung 9000 series 3-D HDTV and a Samsung 3-D blu-ray player. Anyone know what might be the problem?

Thanks in advance!

okay, I'm peeved, my LG player NOW is showing 'Error - check disc' and essentially can't play it, when it originally had no problem playing the disc....

It's tricky to get Sony discs to detect 3D mode it seems.
I have the same issue with my Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Piranha Sony discs.

You might be able to force things to 3D by inserting another strictly 3D disc (eg. Disney titles) first, ejecting it, then slipping in the Sony disc and hope that the TV is still in 3D mode.

I also was able to set my LG 3D TV to side-by-side or 2D-to-3D mode before inserting the Sony disc, just so it would detect any 3D input existed, then, once the main menu came up, I changed to the correct interlaced 3D mode for use with my LG passive polarized glasses.

Samsung is shutter? ...so might have different 3D modes available.

Giles, perhaps try cleaning the disc or contacting Sony for a replacement disc.

I tried the former, will go the latter route.
