Since studios aren't mandate to use the blue Blu-ray cases, why do they use them?

Back when there was still competition with HD DVD it made sense to have the blue cases to separate themselves apart. The "war" is over now. Why are we still stuck with these ugly ass cases?

The studios occasionally make special cases for bigger/important releases and now they've been using slipcovers to highlight certain titles. But for the most part they still use the ugly blue cases. Why? Why use them when they could use clear cases that look 100x better?

Because it's blu-ray, not clear-ray.

You're spoiled by those nifty Criterion cases, huh?

As much as I love the CC cases...no. Blu is good as it is case wise...well...before they got all eco friendly.

You can find colored cases on ebay. And they're the Elite style case, same as what Universal, Fox, WB use. Here's some pics from blu-ray.com members:

Huh, I like the blue cases. I had no idea people dislike them and think they're ugly.

Slighly off topic but I was in Best Buy this afternoon picking up The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and while the blu-ray case seems slightly flimsy that DVD case is simply atrocious! It was damn near An Inconvenient Truth bad!

Be glad it didn't use a pink laser and called Pink-Ray.

In addition to the blue, the border at the top that reads Blu-ray disc is very unappealing.

I guess I am sorta spoiled by the Criterion cases yes but I shouldn't be... they're small compared to the studio giants.

I'll agree, but luckily I'm not a packaging nerd who gets up in arms about it.

I've never really liked the cases, and I'd prefer they all looked like CC BDs, but... hey, whatever.

I like the blue cases. Makes sense... even though I got the green case for "Whip It"

I like the blue cases, although those black ones pictured above are neat.

I actually find it annoying when studios use something other than the blue cases now because they're harder to replace.

I don't really care what color they use, but I prefer Blu-ray packaging to DVD just because it saves space.

I too like the Blue cases. Much better for shelf storage than the DVD cases. I have a few DVD's slated to upgrade to Blu simply because they are in the original snapper cases.

Re: Since studios aren't mandate to use the blue Blu-ray cases, why do they use them?

I wouldn't mind if they even started putting titles in slimmer cases. I am all about shelf space right now as I have none left. I've got bds and dvds stuffed in almost every spare nook and cranny on my shelves. Here are pictures of my main shelves to see how crammed they are.

Spoiler:

And there is still a good chunk of my bds that I can't even fit on these shelves and are in the other room.

The Criterion cases are very nice, but I have no problem with the standard cases

The Proposition looks real sexy in that black case.

The color of the Blu-ray cases doesn't really bother me I guess and I like their size compared to DVD cases. It would be nice if they were even a tad thinner than they are so more could fit on a shelf but it's still an improvement I suppose. I actually think the clear cases like Criterion uses are sort of plain looking to be honest.
