I'm surprised anamorphic BD was never considered while ironing out the BD spec. Even DVD had a (never used) 20:9 option.

Ooooohhhhh, I can sidebar Facebook and Twitter when watching movies that aren't 2.35:1? I'm sure the market this is intended for gives a shit about that.

^ Given more and more TV's are being marketed as "smart" TV's, I believe there just may be a market for all that useless bullshit.

I'd like my TV to be "smart" in that I want built-in wifi, streaming capabilities and possibly YouTube access. Anyone who wants to see a stream of tweets during a movie clearly has zero attention span.

Very interesting. I didn't know that. More info here:

It looks like it's actually part of the MPEG-2 specification, but not part of the DVD spec.

Since that's the case, I would imagine that h.264 also has a 20:9 anamorphic provision, but again, not adopted by the BD spec.
