And I would disagree with you about the transfer here. They got it absolutely right. This is very, very close to the way the film originally looked theatrically and it's a monumental leap beyond any other home video version. For that reason alone I would rate it higher than many more popular packages of more classic films that came out this year. But my list was strictly personal. These were the releases I found most satisfying for one reason or another. Like I said, lots of worthy contenders this year. Hard to narrow down to even ten. |
Re: Your Top 10 of 2011 (Blu-ray Edition).
I'm not including Star Wars in my list because it could have been a lot better.
The Cable Guy: 15th Anniversary - Actual special features with a neat commentary with Ben Stiller and Jim Carrey The Ten Commandments: Limited Edition Gift Set The Great Dictator AND Modern Times from Criterion Scream Trilogy - 1 really great documentary, 1 okay documentary Halloween II: 30th Anniversary Edition - Great to have on BD, some great features as well as "Terror in the Aisles" in HD! The Lion King: Diamond Edition West Side Story: 50th Anniversary Edition Pulp Fiction Evil Dead II - Fantastic transfer and fantastic documentary! |
Re: Your Top 10 of 2011 (Blu-ray Edition).
1.Black Swan
2.Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil 3. Evil Dead 2(25th anniversary edition) 4. Clockwork Orange(40th anniversary) 5. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows(i'll count both as 1) and while I haven't bought them yet(a problem i'm correcting by the end of the month) but from the reviews they top my list. 6. West Side Story (50th anniversary 4 disc edition) 7. Lion King (Four-Disc Diamond Edition Blu-ray 3D edition)-even without owning a 3D tv 8. 12 angry Men (Criterion Collection) And I would put Legend(Ultimate Edition) and Straw Dogs (1971) since those are two at the top of my purchase list but haven't seen any reviews for them as of yet. |
Re: Your Top 10 of 2011 (Blu-ray Edition).
Many ways to rank them: Movie, Video Quality, Extras, Complete Set, 3D, Packaging...
I am just going with what I was most impressed with and/or enjoyed the most. 1. Lion King 3D (Maybe the greatest animated movie of all-time, VQ is perfect, Most enjoyable 3D I have watched, extras, sound is fantastic) 2. Star Wars Complete Set (My top movie set of all time, LOVE SW4, VQ is NOT perfect but AWESOME anyway, Extras are great, Sound is outstanding, MUST have for my Movie Collection) 3. LotR EE (2nd fav movie set, packaging looks great, sound perfect, extras my be best ever like the DVD EEs) 4. The Ten Commandments (VQ is unbelievable for a 60 year old, color jump off the screen, one of the all-time classics, great old hollywood classic actors, enjoy watching every year.) 5. Smallville 10 (Watched/Collected every year, brings it all to a close perfectly, extras suck, VQ is very good. Had fun for 10 years, enjoyed the closer. Will watch for years to come.) 6. Harry Potter 1 & 2 (VQ was great for such a dark movie, just like Smallville 10, bring closer to a great series. Extras were very good, not great. Will watch for years to come.) 7. The Walking Dead Complete 1st Season (Did not see on TV, and was I wowed. Could not stopping watching. VQ was good, but it is the content that put it on my list. Even if it the VQ was terrible, I still would have put it on my list.) 8. X-Men 1st Class (VQ Awesome, just love watching the movie, tons of fun. Great reboot of the series.) 9. Tangled 3D (Pixar came in and saved this "Disney" movie. 3D VQ is out of this world. Funny, touching, visually stunning. Best NEW family movie for 2011.) 10. The Help (VQ is great, but is just a great story that need to be told. Inspirational.) |

Barry Lyndon
Beethoven Symphonies 1 - 9 (Christian Thielemann, conducting) Citizen Kane The Double Life of Veronique The Illusionist Island of Lost Souls The Killing Kiss Me Deadly Sweet Smell of Success Taxi Driver |
Re: Your Top 10 of 2011 (Blu-ray Edition).
Das Boot (2-Disc Collector's Set)
The Lord of the Rings (Extended Editions) Zombie Carlos Ten Commandments Ben Hur It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World Tron Legacy (soley for it's jaw dropping 7.1 soundmix) Tree of Life Taxi Driver ~ - I haven't seen it, but the numerous complaints about the PQ of Jurassic Park and The Lost World have been discouraging to say the least - the lack of extras that the Star Wars DVD's had and were not ported over to the bluray version also hampers me to not include it on my list - I don't like the video of Santa Sangre - the black levels are too gray. - Why West Side Story did not use the 70mm 6-track sound stems is just beyond me - this should have sounded just as good as 'The Sound of Music' but it doesn't by a long shot. - Lion King's remix does not sound like the original 5.1 theatrical mix - it's all over the place, very noticeable during the songs, the vocals should NOT be in the surround channels. - Tangled - no commentary track... really? really?? - any and all Blue Underground blu's - with yellow subtitles (i.e, 'Deep Red') - stop it - they are goddamn distracting. - X-Men First Class - in digital projection (in the theater) looked like crap and from the reviews I've read about the bluray's PQ it beautifully retains that flaw.

Re: Your Top 10 of 2011 (Blu-ray Edition).
I don't know about a top 10, but I can think of at least my top 3.
1. Stanley Kubrick: Limited Edition Collection 2. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy: Extended Editions 3. Breaking Bad: The Complete Third Season |
Re: Your Top 10 of 2011 (Blu-ray Edition).
My List:
1. Lord of the Rings Extended Editions -- This release -- along with the Star Wars box -- proved that Blu-ray is now mainstream! Somebody alert Spielberg to this fact!! 2. Destroy all Monsters -- I have always wanted at least a "decent" release of this -- the best of the original Godzilla movies. All previous home releases to optical disc were complete junk (battered prints, non-anamorphic, they were all dreadful!). 3. West Side Story -- I know about the controversy regarding the less-than-two-second "fade-out"/"fade-in" at the beginning. I could really care less. (And there are replacement discs available for those that do.) This was a terrific release of a classic musical. It's so sad that the same can not be stated regarding the "My Fair Lady" release. 4. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows - Part 2 --- Wonderful Blu-ray release for a wonderful movie. 5. X-Men: First Class -- Perhaps the best of the X-Men movies. 6. The Lion King -- A "Must Have" Blu-ray of the best "modern" Disney animated Classic. 7. Jurassic Park Trilogy -- So does Spielberg really think Blu-ray is mainstream now, or was this release prompted by the short-lived "Terra Nova" TV Series? Either way, it's nice to have these movies on Blu! Now, how 'bout "Jaws", pretty please? 8. The Ten Commandments -- Great release of a classic "Movie" movie. But, could Moses' beard get any longer? 9. Rise of the Planet of the Apes -- Probably the best pure SCI-FI theatrical release of 2011. (And how sad is that?) 10. Star Trek: The Next Generation Blu-ray Sampler -- What? It's not due until later this month?? No problem! I'll include the other Star Trek release of 2011 ... Uh ... |

Paramount can do a stellar job with 'The Ten Commandments' but does an epic fail with 'My Fair Lady' -   (okay CBS is to blame here, Paramount only released it and nothing do with the actual transfer) |
Re: Your Top 10 of 2011 (Blu-ray Edition).
10. Hobo with a Shotgun
09. Salo - Criterion 08. Dressed to Kill 07. Rare Exports 06. Scarface 05. West Side Story 04. Blow Out -Criterion 03. Zombie -Blue Underground 02. Jackie Brown 01. Citizen Kane Honourable Mentions: 01. Blue Velvet (especially the lost footage) 02. The Killing - Criterion 03. Star Wars (say what you want about the prequels, but some amazing transfers there). |
Re: Your Top 10 of 2011 (Blu-ray Edition).
I didn't get that many but I do have a few I picked up this year that were exceptional
Jurassic Park was it reference quality, no, but it does look damn good and probably the best aq of anything I own Contact a sentimental favorite since it was one of the early DVD releases Honeymoon in Vegas a guilty pleasure that never even had a WS DVD release before Planes, Trains and Autos finally could dump my 1st gen POS |
