A Streetcar Named Desire - 4/10/12

From Blu-ray.com --
Next year, Warner Home Entertainment will release A Streetcar Named Desire in a special 60th Anniversary Blu-ray edition. Director Elia Kazan's landmark adaptation of the Tennessee Williams play focuses on the physical and mental battle of wills between fading socialite Blanche DuBois (Vivien Leigh, Gone with the Wind) and Stanley Kowalski (Marlon Brando, The Godfather), her savage and domineering brother-in-law.

Nominated for twelve Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actor: Marlon Brando, and Best Director: Elia Kazan, the film ultimately won four at the 1952 Oscar Ceremony - Best Actress: Vivien Leigh, Best Supporting Actor: Karl Malden, Best Supporting Actress: Kim Hunter, and Best Black-and-White Art/Set Direction: Richard Day and George James Hopkins.

Warner's 60th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray presents the restored version of A Streetcar Named Desire in its 1.37:1 original aspect ratio. Other technical details are still unknown, though the disc will have the following supplements:

Commentary with Karl Malden, film historian Rudy Behlmer, and Jeff Young
Elia Kazan movie trailer gallery
Movie and audio outtakes
Marlon Brando screen test
Elia Kazan: A Director's Journey documentary
Five behind-the-scenes featurettes:
- A Streetcar on Broadway
- A Streetcar in Hollywood
- Desire and Censorship
- North and the South
- An Actor Named Brando

The 60th Anniversary Edition also comes packaged in a forty-page book set that contains on-set/promotional photographs and film history trivia.

A Streetcar Named Desire streets on April 10th, 2012.

Now this is great to see. There are a lot of classic films like this one that were among the very first DVDs to be released that still haven't found a home on Blu-ray. Yes, I realize the whole "catalog titles don't sell" thing, but it is pretty shocking when I think about some of those first DVDs in my collection, like Streetcar Named Desire, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Best Years of Our Lives. It's just interesting to think back on how different the format change has been handled.

Yup, I like to see more classics coming. Warner continues to roll them out.

I take it by that next-to-last line in the article that this is going to be another digibook.

Never a fan of this movie but good to see Warner releasing it. It would be nice if Universal coincided an On The Waterfront release.

Agree about the movie, but it's a Columbia title I believe

Not a bad cover. Could definitely be worse. Just wish I enjoyed this film more than I do.
In fact, none of the so far hinted at classics Warner intends to release next year have me all that giddy with anticipation. Same with the leaked list from Universal.

Although I do like digibooks for some dumb reason, so maybe for the B2G1 sale from B&N in the summer, I might toss it into an order.

I watched this on Netflix streaming in HD last year along with On The Waterfront and enjoyed them both. It was great seeing Brando in his prime as I'd only seen the fat Brando movies.

When I watch this movie I can never view it as anything other than Tennessee Williams internal debate over his love of rough trade (with Stella and Blanche both being him).

I just watched this last night. The presentation is beautiful. Warner did a nice job. This is essential to any classic film library -- I was happy to pay $23 for it.

Where did you get it for $23? (unless that was release week price)
