I guess they are slipcovers, I didn't really see it at first.

Just an FYI - at Best Buy (B&M) you get a GoT keychain (a miniature shield with the Stark sigil on it) if you pre-order the set with a $5 deposit. I don't care about the slipcovers, but I may bite for the free keychain, hoping that Best Buy uses similar pricing they used this week for Boardwalk Empire.

^ this

there is also a promo disc of the first episode of GOT you get for free with purchase of Boardwalk though they are marked at .01 and it is possible to purchase without buying Boardwalk

if the PQ/AQ of the first episode is any indication of the entire set (given the already known greatness of the content) this is going to be one blu ray set to be reckoned with

I think that the PQ overall was quite good. However, something about the scenes with snow in the first part seemed a little off. I'll take another look as I've only watched it once.

Re: Game of Thrones: Season 1

Could someone please explain the significance/meaning of the two Best Buy cover designs? I've never seen the show (don't have premium cable) or read the books, but am considering a blind buy.

The show/books take place in a realm where lands are ruled by Houses. The main house is House Stark, their sigil is a wolf. Another house has dragons as their sigil.

I like the wolf cover art. I'll probably get this but hopefully the price drops more into the range of Boardwalk Empire before the series is released.

This is exactly what I think. The glaring difference in price for two series of the same length in episodes from the same studio has me scratching my head. Around 40 would be a nice price.

Thanks, I had a hunch it was probably something like that.

Re: Game of Thrones: Season 1

The HBO store is offering a bonus "Creating The World Of Westeros" disc if you order it from them:

http://store.hbo.com/game-of-thrones...shows_game-of-

They have 20% off codes fairly frequently if you dig around a bit online.

but is there a fantasy aspect to this series? are there actual dragons and other creatures? or is it flat out drama? Sorry, I've been living under a rock in regards to the book and this series (and I don't get HBO any longer so most of the pay-cable series go under the radar for me)

Wasn't the MSRP on Boardwalk the same as Game of Thrones? It makes sense to me why they would possibly charge more for Game of Thrones though, its a more popular property, and it's release is coming about a month before season 2 starts, so a lot of people will pick it up to catch up on before the new season airs. Boardwalk Empire had its first season released after the second season was done airing.

To say would be giving it away. Let's just say that this first season is "flat out drama" in a fictional, yet mostly realistic Middle-Ages.

Yes, there is a fantasy element to the series. There is some magic and a few creatures that don't exist in our world, but it isn't a huge part of the series. Yet, anyway. It's not not like Harry Potter or even Lord of the Rings.

As far as dragons go, "Game of Thrones" takes place in a world where dragons did exist in the not-too distant past, but are seemingly extinct. The characters acknowledge that they existed, and there are dragon bones (we see a very large dragon skull in one scene) and artifacts made from dragon bones.

Some really good looking extras.

If I can get it for $39.99 or less for the BD, I'll bite. I love the show and hope people will support it, so more seasons will get made.

$5 is a deal breaker? Skip lunch or a trip to Starbucks once this week.

It's still a little expensive for me, hopefully my wife will pick it up as a birthday present.
