And this can't possibly be renegotiated with Sony?

I love the original and certainly more so than the remake.

I enjoyed both the original and the remake. However, the asking price was totally appealing for what is essentially a catalog title.

So then it's possible Sony might release it at more reasonable price down the road?

According to NoirFan on post #82, it sounds very unlikely.

OD sales are on the decline, not rise. Sony clearly did not have any intentions of releasing it themselves. When the exclusive time period runs out...sure, maybe. They already did the work. But at this point, Twilight Time is/was the only way to get it. And if they decide to release more, well, they will have lots of angry customers to deal with.

Angry customers to deal with? You mean people who bought it only because it was supposed to be a rare item, not because they actually liked the movie?

Re: Fright Night (1985): Twilight Time exclusive - 12/13/11

I would suggest selling 3,000 copies out of a 3,000 copy run IS a success. As others have stated it had essentially no advertising or promotion to speak of. Outside of a handful of internet forums, how many people even knew it was being released?

Congratulations to Twilight Time for their success in selling out "Fright Night" but I would suggest that these heated/lively "discussions" actually helped sell copies but I wouldn't bank on that consistently happening. I would think they would come up with a decent marketing campaign for their limited edition BDs.

So now everyone who bought it bought it because it was rare? Well I guess no "fans" bought it then, right?

Does not matter if you are a fan or not. If you were told you bought something limited to x amount of copies, only to find out that distributer lied, you would be pissed.

3,000 is not a success when they had to pay Sony a licensing fee (among other things) to make these. They are not a studio, so to press 3k (only) copies would actually be fairly expensive as normal runs are now 8-10k (for small titles).

We can argue about this all day. Only Twilight Time knows how much they really made off this deal, and if it's enough to try and bankroll a new project. Me, I love them since I'll make a hefty little profit of cash which I'll stash away for 2012 Blu-ray releases. It's like saying "Gizmo, these 10 Blu-rays are on us!".

Well, they're not going to get a Scrooge McDuck money bin out of this or anything, but if you make 3,000 of something and sell 3,000, that's the greatest level of success possible. They knew their costs and stuff beforehand. The level of profit is guesswork for any one of us, but common sense dictates they're comfortably in the black. It's a small operation, they're not shouldering the costs of the transfer/remastering/whatever, Blu-ray discs aren't their core business, and they're cutting out the middleman. I wouldn't be surprised if they made more money selling 3,000 discs this way than they could if they'd sold twice that many via traditional retail.

Technically, they only sold 2,900 copies. They gave away 10% of their inventory.

But they likely did make more money then what Sony would have (at least the first week or two) if it was released traditionally at retail. This likely wouldn't have even sold 3k copies.

BTW, anyone know if this is a 25GB or 50GB Disc? I assume 25GB since it's just the movie.

If it was re-released it wouldn't be the first movie that has a hard to find version out there replaced by a mass marketed and improved upon second release.

Gizmo remembers. He still won't buy new copies of Shout products because of it.

So in reality there might be 2,700 pissed of customers if they re-release it. Go ahead and do it!

It was a 25GB, I've seen a straight-rip of it.
