The Tree of Life (Blu-ray Exclusive) 10/11/11

An impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950′s, the film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn), through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt).

THE TREE OF LIFE Blu-ray Combo Pack includes a bonus DVD and Digital Copy version of the film. Pre-book date is September 14.
Pissed off that this isn't a Criterion, but it's interesting that they are ONLY releasing it on Blu-ray with the bonus DVD.

Yeah, how is this any different from any other combo release? Not much in the way of extras, according to the article - just a 30-min featurette - put perhaps if Criterion gets their hands on it at some point down the line we'll get a more substantial release.

I don't know, I just thought it was interesting that the didn't decide to release a stand-alone DVD. The article goes in to it more if you read it.

I thought only Buena Vista and Paramount were the only studios that licenesed out their non catalog releases to Criterion, being that this is a FOX title why is it surprising that it wasnt released by Criterion?

The Thin Red Line is from Fox and was released by Criterion.

Blu-ray exclusive what?

It has both a DVD and a blu-ray, nothing exclusive about it.

Really, what's Criterion going to offer over this release other than an increase in price? It probably won't look or sound any different and being a Malick film there may not be much in the way of supplements anyways. I'd rather save the extra $15+ and prefer Criterion concentrate on older films that are in need of being remastered/restored.

If you only buy DVDs, then your only option is a Blu-ray combo pack. No DVD-only version. I believe this might be the first theatrical release to not offer a DVD-only choice.

I fall on the amazing side. Thinking about holding off on this purchase because I can only imagine there will eventually be a double-dip from Criterion.

I am glad I experienced this movie on a large theater screen, but I'm not really sure how it will play for me a second time or in a home theater.

I generally was pretty amazed with the film, until the very end which played out like the ending of "Lost"

can't wait to see the whole 'Creation of the Universe' sequence again, since the audience I was with, were leaving left and right out of sheer confusion.

Re: The Tree of Life (Blu-ray Exclusive) 10/11/11

I'll hold off on buying, since...

a) I haven't seen it yet, and this film is apparently VERY love-it-or-hate-it (although I have an appreciation for Malick, so I might fall into the former).

b) I've seen everyone on the Internet speculate about Criterion eventually picking this one up.

I'll definitely rent when it's out, though.

Few other stinkers did as well. Buried IIRC.

Not shocked. Studios see declining revenue and want to force people to pay more for discs they won't watch.

The MSRP would likely be a few cents cheaper with Criterion.

I'm glad Criterion did not release this movie. Cause then I'd feel obligated to buy it.

Seems like they did well for TTRL and DoH in terms of features. I'd welcome a CC BD of this.

the huge news for us audiophiles:

And the press release says: "The Blu-ray Disc presentation utilizes maximum bit rate encoding and 7.1 audio and a 2.0 stereo mix to bring Malick’s visually stunning masterpiece to life providing consumers with a premium cinematic viewing experience for the home"

And $20 or less from B & N, if they're around long enough for Tree of Life to get a double-dip.

Movie won't be the same on the small screen. But if you have a very large display and an excellent surround system, you may get some of the effect.

I'm going to get this..but...I don't think my little 32 inch will properly do the job. This film is on a whole nother visual engrossment level.

Very excited that we have confirmation of a release date.

Will have to have a BD Malick-fest in anticipation.
