Re: DC Animated Movie Slate for 2012

It will be a crying shame if they don't get at least Kevin Conroy for Killing Joke. I just don't see Peter Weller as Batman. Makes even less sense than Ironside, who is more suited to Darkside than Batman. I much prefer Ironside as Darkside than Andre Braugher.

PhantomStranger 05-23-12 04:21 PM

Re: DC Animated Movie Slate for 2012

Warner has shown they really don't care what the real fans want from these features. Weller's name sells more copies on the cover than Conroy's or Ironside's name will sell, though I suspect he also is more expensive. Whatever the average Mom and Dad recognizes at Walmart is who gets picked for these features. It was utterly disastrous in Batman: Year One, where Batman's voice actor was a hack. Outside of Bruce Timm, Warner has repeatedly shown they have little understanding of what makes superheroes tick in mainstream media.

Re: DC Animated Movie Slate for 2012

Kevin Conroy is by far the definitive voice for the character. If not him the voice actor who was in Under the Red Hood, Bruce Greenwood is a pretty decent Bruce Wayne/Batman. The guy who voiced him in Year One was pretty meh.

I love Conroy too but...TDKR isn't the same guy that came from TAS or most of the others Conroy has worked in.

While I wouldve preferred Ironside for this not cuz of TAS but also...this Batman is ugly. He's let so much happen to himself and Gotham. He's a building that still stands but it's a mess of one. It's appropriate they got someone else. Ironside's voice fit that harsh ugliness in the man.

Yeah, I think it makes sense to use some different voices for different concepts just as there are different artists

An odd art style for the Dark Knight Returns, it's far removed from the classic Frank Miller and Klaus Janson design from the comic book. I guess Warner was scared the kiddies wouldn't recognize Batman at the store, if they went with the iconic lightning cover.

ScissorPuppy 08-01-12 06:30 AM

Re: DC Animated Movie Slate for 2012

If I recall Under The Red Hood has covert art design that didn't match the animation style too didn't? I'll be making a custom cover once part 2 is released.
I have a spare two disc criterion case that I'm dying to use the iconic lighting image for :)

Mike86 08-01-12 03:42 PM

Re: DC Animated Movie Slate for 2012

The cover art looks okay to me. The trailer looks pretty promising too, the only thing I'm not sure on is Peter Weller as Batman. He sounds okay but not my favorite Batman voice I guess. Maybe it'll sound better when I see the whole product.

Agreed, IMO I would have loved for Michael Ironside to finish what he started in BTAS.

It seems they are cutting down on the Showcase shorts :(

I think they've really utilized the DC Nation block on cartoon network to air things that probably would have been shorts on the DVDs. Things like the Sword of the Atom, etc.

It was already announced they were being shuttled for budgetary reasons. Don't expect to see them again. I think their original purpose was to introduce secondary characters to mainstream consumers, in the hopes they would generate enough buzz for their own features.

Looking forward to this, very dark and violent Graphic Novel. Just be ready for it to NOT be just like the Novel, this have to change for the video format and ratings system, which is the right thing to do.

I'm excited that Batman & Me: The Bob Kane Story is a bonus feature! I wonder what the chances are of a newly produced feature on Bill Finger for a subsequent DTV DCAU release.

So will that be an animated adaptation of the 'official' Bob Kane version of how he created Batman single-handed? With his mother sewing a bat costume for his friend to model so Kane could draw from life?

Since when was Robin a girl ? Oh well, I guess I shouldn't expect too much from a movie that doesn't have Kevin Conroy as Batman.

For the love of God, tell me you're ironically trolling.

How is what I said trolling ? Batman's no good unless it's Kevin Conroy and I've never heard of a female Robin.

/\ Deidrich Bader gave a great interpretation during his run on Batman: The Brave and The Bold.

Robin is female in The Dark Knight Returns.

Clearly you must not read very many comics. The Dark Knight Returns is one of the most famous Batman stories of all time.
Spoiler:
In the story Batman has been retired for many years and reappears following the return of Harvey Dent and a gang called the Mutants. In the story Carrie Kelley (aka Robin) shows up to save Batman and basically just tags along with him while he's fighting crime. Aside from The Dark Knight Returns and The Dark Knight Strikes Again (the sequel to The Dark Knight Returns), she isn't a very big character. Actually she isn't even Robin in The Dark Knight Strikes Again but a different new hero.

I'm pretty excited to see this adaptation myself. I wonder how long Warner Premiere/DC will make us wait for Part Two.

Conroy is great but let's get past this notion that he's the only one who can voice Batman. It's like saying we won't read any Batman not drawn by Neal Adams.

I agree but honestly at this point in time Conroy is clearly the voice to beat. No one else has even really come close in my opinion. The only other voice actor I thought was decent was Bruce Greenwood in Under the Red Hood and I've read he's in Young Justice (haven't watched the series).

Well, excuse me for not knowing that there was a female Robin in a single Batman story....

Re: DC Animated Movie Slate for 2012

No one is anywhere close to Kevin Conroy, but Bruce Greenwood isn't bad in Young Justice. When I see an animated Batman anywhere, the very first thing that comes to mind is Kevin Conroy. He's just so closely associated with the role, you can't help but think of him in the part. And when it's someone else, all you keep thinking the whole time is "the animation may be great, but the show's just not right."

Lastdaysofrain 08-23-12 07:04 AM

Re: DC Animated Movie Slate for 2012

Greenwood has a a weird slight southern twang for some reason that I find off putting. I actually liked Dietric Balder (sp??) on Brave and the Bold a lot better, but Conroy was the best by far.

Has anyone read any news about the future of these DC Annimated Movies now that Warner has shut down their direct to DVD division?

MrSmearkase 08-23-12 09:06 AM

Re: DC Animated Movie Slate for 2012

From The Hollywood Reporter;

“Given the continuing decline in the direct-to-video film market and shifting business models in the production of digital series, the decision was made to close Warner Premiere,” the company said in a release. “The division will continue and complete production on its remaining film and digital series project into the fall. In addition, the evaluation of potential digital content will be folded into Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, and Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Home Video will continue to produce and release animated films, such as Scooby Doo, Tom and Jerry and DC Universe.

Setting aside the fact that that "single Batman story" is possibly the most important of the last quarter century, it's also the story that this movie is telling. It's okay that you didn't know what you were talking about, but is it too much to ask that you not cop an attitude about it?

sounds like an issue w/ yourself. Just cuz a person is well known to you (or in general population) doesn't mean they are shackled to it. It's preference. Would Conroy be good for this? Sure. The guy has done sooooo much work w/ it. Is he where the line begins and ends w/ it? Of course not...honestly...just for that bit in TAS we got w/ TDKR. I'd actually prefer Ironside more than Conroy. See what I did there? Preference.

Wait...if you like Conroy and know of his work as Batman..did you never see the episode where they literally had a small bit w/ TDKR? Did you forget or never see it?

And actually we've had 2 Robins be female. Not just one. I don't know much about The Spoiler's turn as Robin. It didn't go so well for her either..but...it's all "good" now.
