The Future of 3D - 2D glasses

This is rather amusing. Glasses that convert 3D images to 2D.

I believe the intent is for when some people in the room want to watch a movie in 3D but others prefer to watch it in 2D.

I can't imagine a big market for this.

....so they'd be paying more to see it in 2D?

I don't really see the point of this.

Then again, I buy all my movies in 2D anyway...

I guess if the movie you want to see is ONLY in 3D, this might be an option.

There are those (like me) where extended 3D watching gives them a headache. I wonder if this helps minimize that effect?

3D was awesome...in the 70's.

Most 3D Blu-rays have a 2D viewing option on the same disc or come with a separate 2D disc. Only a few are locked to 3D, and all of those have comparable 2D editions sold separately.

As I said, these glasses are for the rare situation where someone in the room wants to watch a movie/TV show/video game in 3D while someone else in the same room wants to watch in 2D.

You need to play some 3D PS3 games. You will change your tune.

Re: The Future of 3D - 2D glasses

Josh, I think I'm about to upgrade my main TV and was thinking of getting 3D. I am curious about playing 3D games. But can you please shed light on the whole passive/active? I know active require the expensive glasses, but with passive, am I sacrificing good PQ?

I have both. I wrote up my experiences with a passive set in a blog post here:

For gaming, the loss of resolution shouldn't be too noticeable.

These glasses are for RealD movies in the theater, not home viewing (though they say they will work on some home televisions in passive mode).

3D movies in the theatres are already too dark when wearing the 3D glasses and now you get to watch them in 2D when it's too dark AND pay the extra $3.00 surcharge for the 3D presentation?

Another reason to wait for the DVD/Blu-ray and just watch it in 2D.
