Interesting.

For those wanting their release of The Inglorious Bastards on Blu-Ray, I've seen it at Best Buy for $7.99. Now I'm regretting not grabbing Birdemic there when I had the chance...

I think David Gregory and John Cregan are both directing their focus towards filmmaking/production, so they may just not be as interested in the Severin side of things.

But yeah, it really does look like Synapse Films is the only cult label that releases quality stuff with any frequency anymore.

I noticed that they've been doing some work for Second Sight on extras recently, so that might be another area they're focusing on instead of their own releases.

The Wild Geese and Ashanti popped up on Amazon this morning for a 12/11 release, so I guess Severin is still alive and kickin'!

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

BD/DVD combos. Severin has specs for 2 of them on their site:

https://www.severin-films.com/2014/01/09/dead-kids/
https://www.severin-films.com/2014/01/09/thirst/

Thirst has the same features as the Synapse DVD. Looks like they might have added an extra commentary track for Dead Kids.

Love those horror films from Oz. Is THE LONG WEEKEND still on track for a release as well? One other, from Peter Weir, well deserving of a BD release is THE PLUMBER.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

I hate seeing small companies like Severin lose their grip on the catalog market. HORROR EXPRESS was a very nice release, but they let HOUSE THAT DRIPPED BLOOD slip through their fingers. They never did explain what they meant by "problematic release." What I gather is that they owned the rights for a fair period of time but neglected to get it out before they lost those rights. A company like this has to be vigilant and efficient. They can't survive by releasing one or two movies a year. I hope they can find a way to get their act together, as we need as many sources for Blu-ray catalog titles as we can get right now.

Wouldn't "problematic release" more likely mean that the elements for creating the discs might have been in some way unsatisfactory? I mean if we're talking a it niche titles like these, I suppose it's reasonable to assume that the materials for them may not be in the best shape.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

Severin is planning to release a ton of great titles in the future!

I'm going to hold onto my 3-Disc of Dust Devil, since it seems like this new release won't have all the extras and might be missing some stuff.

http://www.fangoria.com/new/exclusiv...severin-films/

Dust Devil (Director's Cut)
Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's "Island of Dr. Moreau"
Axe
Kidnapped Coed
Bloody Brothers
Nightmare Castle
Sinful Dwarf (*Planned to have both XXX & American Release Cuts)

I vaguely remember watching Dust Devil many years ago. It didn't leave much of an impression on me, I can't remember if I enjoyed it or not.

I posted a review with entirely too many screenshots for Vampyros Lesbos, as if anyone reading this needs me to sell them on it.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

Indeed, I shall pass on Vampyros Lesbos for the simple reason that its 2.5 hours of HD film content have been crammed into a paltry 15.5 Gigs. The way Mr. Adam Tyner puts it (oh, so *diplomatically*) is to "look past bit meters." But, I can't look past the fact that we have a bit-starved release which should have *a lot* more breathing room, and to which it seems a shoddy encode was given... If Adam had actually plunked down hard cash for his review copy, would his sentiments have been different in this regard?

Oh, if indeed he *did* pay for this copy, I fail to see why he didn't call them out severely on their shoddiness... If Severin's going to all the trouble to release this film in 1080p, why chintz out on not using a BD25 to its fullest, let alone spend a couple more bucks per copy for a BD50?

This is really starting to get to me. Companies doing this, I mean. Yes, I know the AVC codec has progressed admirably since 2006, but so also BD50s have drastically come down in price in the mastering process...

If that's not the greatest film title of all time, it's certainly the most straightforward. I mean, it tells you exactly what you're in for.

Oh, no, no, no. I apologize if I gave that impression. The movie itself -- 89 minutes in length -- is 15.5 gigs (which, yes, is tiny). The hour of extras take up another 7 gigs. I've rewritten that sentence in the review for clarity.

That wasn't meant to be a slam or anything. I just mean that the numbers are far enough below par that I'd expect the quality to take a hit, but that didn't turn out to be the case in practice. I noted the file size in the review because...well, I'm the type of person who pays attention to that sort of thing. I'm not criticizing people who look at bitrates: I'm one of them! I mention the type of disc used in every review I've written for years and years now. I always use BD Info before writing a review. A high bitrate doesn't inherently make for a great encode, though, nor does a lower bitrate inherently mean that it'll be a lousy encode.

Because the texture is rather oily, as I noted in the review, that does make it easier to encode.

No, they wouldn't. (Also, you're replying to a post I made, so I don't get why you're talking about me as if I'm not here. )

If you want a few cases in point (and I've gotten in hot water by two different labels for statements like this; I'm unofficially suspended from writing about one of them, and another threatened to stop sending review copies):

http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/67925...s-ghoulies-ii/
http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/66586...r-to-a-scream/
http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/64142/performance/
http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/55551...ou-live-shoot/

I feel that I'm very vocal and very direct, and I have to admit to being taken aback by accusations of trading my integrity for free Blu-ray discs. I genuinely don't know how anyone could read my reviews and think that.

I thought my review of Vampyros Lesbos' presentation was extraordinarily thorough. Honestly, I thought I was being critical to the point that I'd be accused of nitpicking (something I hear a lot), so I'm definitely surprised that I'm being told that I'm going too easy on it. I'd put down money right now that my review points out more flaws than anyone else's will.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

If people were unaware, labels will pull review copies if they keep getting criticized no matter how much truth the review may contain. For them, reviews are little more than promotional marketing vehicles.

In the audiophile world, reviewers have developed elaborate ways to disguise heavily critical reviews as positive. So the reader has to see between the lines for what the reviewer actually felt about the product.

Woah... I completely misinterpreted your review. Thanks for clarifying! Indeed, 16.6 gb for an 89-minute feature, and an average video encode nearly of 22 mbps isn't really that bad at all. In fact, it's downright great compared to some recent catalog releases I've had the (displeasure) of buying without researching the BDInfo stats beforehand. For a truly horrible example, Frank Perry's spellbinding DAVID AND LISA was just released, and the 95-minute feature was encoded in only 11 Gigs! And we had around 8 gigs of wasted space on the BD25, and a feature that was ruined by an attrociously soft video look and compression artifacts running wild...

And, that of course makes the other comments I rather harshly made, irrelevant, and I apologize for calling you out needlessly... In fact, after seeing the additional evidence you've seen fit to provide in the links above, I now state unequivocally, that you are *my* type of reviewer, who does seem to call a spade a spade.
