Apparently many of Severin's Blu-rays (and several DVDs) have been discontinued. Are they folding up shop? They haven't released a Blu-ray since Horror Express last October, although that's one of the few titles to remain in-print.
For those wanting their release of The Inglorious Bastards on Blu-Ray, I've seen it at Best Buy for $7.99. Now I'm regretting not grabbing Birdemic there when I had the chance...

I think David Gregory and John Cregan are both directing their focus towards filmmaking/production, so they may just not be as interested in the Severin side of things.
But yeah, it really does look like Synapse Films is the only cult label that releases quality stuff with any frequency anymore.
Some changes being made so the release schedule has been patchy of late but plenty to come in the not too distant

I noticed that they've been doing some work for Second Sight on extras recently, so that might be another area they're focusing on instead of their own releases.

Love those horror films from Oz. Is THE LONG WEEKEND still on track for a release as well? One other, from Peter Weir, well deserving of a BD release is THE PLUMBER.

I hate seeing small companies like Severin lose their grip on the catalog market. HORROR EXPRESS was a very nice release, but they let HOUSE THAT DRIPPED BLOOD slip through their fingers. They never did explain what they meant by "problematic release." What I gather is that they owned the rights for a fair period of time but neglected to get it out before they lost those rights. A company like this has to be vigilant and efficient. They can't survive by releasing one or two movies a year. I hope they can find a way to get their act together, as we need as many sources for Blu-ray catalog titles as we can get right now.

I vaguely remember watching Dust Devil many years ago. It didn't leave much of an impression on me, I can't remember if I enjoyed it or not.

Indeed, I shall pass on Vampyros Lesbos for the simple reason that its 2.5 hours of HD film content have been crammed into a paltry 15.5 Gigs. The way Mr. Adam Tyner puts it (oh, so *diplomatically*) is to "look past bit meters." But, I can't look past the fact that we have a bit-starved release which should have *a lot* more breathing room, and to which it seems a shoddy encode was given... If Adam had actually plunked down hard cash for his review copy, would his sentiments have been different in this regard?
Oh, if indeed he *did* pay for this copy, I fail to see why he didn't call them out severely on their shoddiness... If Severin's going to all the trouble to release this film in 1080p, why chintz out on not using a BD25 to its fullest, let alone spend a couple more bucks per copy for a BD50?
This is really starting to get to me. Companies doing this, I mean. Yes, I know the AVC codec has progressed admirably since 2006, but so also BD50s have drastically come down in price in the mastering process...

Because the texture is rather oily, as I noted in the review, that does make it easier to encode.

I feel that I'm very vocal and very direct, and I have to admit to being taken aback by accusations of trading my integrity for free Blu-ray discs. I genuinely don't know how anyone could read my reviews and think that.
I thought my review of Vampyros Lesbos' presentation was extraordinarily thorough. Honestly, I thought I was being critical to the point that I'd be accused of nitpicking (something I hear a lot), so I'm definitely surprised that I'm being told that I'm going too easy on it. If people were unaware, labels will pull review copies if they keep getting criticized no matter how much truth the review may contain. For them, reviews are little more than promotional marketing vehicles.
In the audiophile world, reviewers have developed elaborate ways to disguise heavily critical reviews as positive. So the reader has to see between the lines for what the reviewer actually felt about the product.
