I finally took the plunge...

All these years of collecting dvd's, I've been hesitant to jump into the Blu Ray era. I took the plunge this last week though and went out and bought a 55" Samsung LCD TV. The set up in store was freakin fantastic. I'll be buying my Blu Ray player this week to go with it but I have one question. After we got home and hooked it all up, I moved my cable and Xbox to 1080p to check it out, to me, it seems sort of "fake" looking. What I mean is, the actors are so crystal clear and up front but it looks like they are acting the movie out in front of a backdrop or something. Sounds crazy but that's how I'd describe it. Does anyone know what is up with that?? Or is that how it's supposed to look? I've had a Plasma 720p for the past 4 or 5 years and I never experienced this. Maybe my eyes need to adjust to the new clarity, lol. I searched around for a way to maybe calibrate my set or something but couldn't find anything. It's a Samsung Model #LN55C630K1F if that helps. I guess I was hoping somebody might have the same set and experienced the same issue. Again, I'm very new to the 1080p upgrade so maybe what I'm seeing is what I'm supposed to be seeing.

Don't get me wrong though, I love the TV. My games look so bad ass and I'm sure I'll love the hell out of Blu Ray. Maybe my eyes will adjust to the awesomness that is 1080p...lol. Any help anybody could give is appreciated.

Is the set 120Hz or higher? You may have the motion enhancement setting enabled.

Yeah, I'd say the motion enhancement is enabled. My girlfriend's mom has that set up on her brand new TV and it drives me nuts but no one else seems to notice or care. I've thought about trying to change it while nobody is around.

Ah, 120hz motion, or as I like to call it, "British TV show exteriors mode".

My mom has it enabled on her TV and also doesn't seem to notice. I find it hard to watch anything on it.

Glad I'm not the only one what hates that mode. It's always on in the stores and makes everything look fake and terrible. Most of my friends can't notice it and it drives me crazy.

Do 600Hz displays have this same issue? If so, can you turn it "off"?

Awesome!! I went in and turned that off and it was a drastic change in my eyes. It looks great. Thank you guys for the info. Now I just can't wait to get a Blu Ray player. Any recomendations on Blu Rays that will make me just say WOW!!?? I've heard Avatar was something out of this world.

Pretty much any Pixar film and most of the newer CGI movies.

Anything but Avatar, Dark Knight, or Toy Story 3.

I always refer to 120hz (and higher) motion as "the BBC filter."

If your BD player and television are compatible, why not just have everything at 24hz? Most films on Blu-ray are already encoded for that setting.

Re: I finally took the plunge...

I think it's worth clarifying that it's not the refresh rate itself (ie., 120Hz) that causes the ugly (IMO) soap opera motion. A higher refresh rate just provides the potential for the TV to do interpolation on each refresh. Even with motion interpolation turned off, a 120Hz TV still refreshes at 120Hz...it just refreshes the exact same frame the appropriate number of times instead of interpolating frames for each refresh. So, the culprit is strictly the (almost always defeatable) motion interpolation algorithm rather than the refresh rate of the TV.

With all that said, I'm with everyone else who despises the motion interpolation and thinks it looks utterly awful.

Everytime I see this, I think it looks like crappy claymation overlaying the actual movement... almost like they are possessed by something as they move...

You should check out Disney's Beauty And The Beast. I was impressed with the picture, it's look liked brand new print.

I also hate that look on the motion blur. I was told to set my LED tv settings to set [Blur Reduction] to “8” and [Judder Reduction] to “0“ and it looks great, doesnt have that "BBC Filter" feel while still looking awesome. Not sure if that helps my tv or not but it was recommended by alot of sites.

I was at a friend's house the other day and watching their 46" Visio w/ 120hz. That shit hurt my mind. I have all my HD sets to output 24hz when watching BDs.

Re: I finally took the plunge...

The 120Hz has nothing to do with how phony the image looks. The reason is simply because the "motion enhancer" is on. Two different things.

Re: I finally took the plunge...

Motion Enhancer is usually the fancy term for 120hz, so they are not two different things.

The motion enhancer can be turned off on 120hz sets and the set still refreshes at 120hz... so they ARE two different things. Very different.

And add me to the list of folks who can't stand this effect. It totally and completely changes the original look and feel of movies.

In addition to the above links, see post #12 in this very thread. You're mistaken.

I just did a keyword search for 'Baraka', and those were the threads that popped up, so that should tell you something. It's an incredible viewing experience.

Yeah, I've recommended Baraka to others. It's pretty amazing.
