The Ten Commandments arrives 3/29/11
1956's The Ten Commandments is being released on March 29, 2011. The 2-disc set is the fully restored movie spread across both discs with only a couple extras. The 6-disc Limited Gift Set comes with 3 BDs and 3 DVDs. The first 2 BDs are the same as the 2-disc set. BD 3 is a restored 1923 silent film version of The Ten Commandments. The fist 2 DVDs are the fully restored movie spead over both discs. DVD 3 has all-new bonus features. Amazon has the price for the 2-disc set at $22.99 and the Gift Set at $54.99.

I know there was that huge clusterfuck over on AVS but I haven't really followed up. Have there been any accurate reviews on the PQ since then?

Good God! (No pun intended)
I got the six-disc collectors' set in the mail yesterday, and it might be the single most ridiculously impressive package I've ever seen.
The two-disc Blu-ray release should essentially be bare-bones. The commentary might be there, but the BDs are devoted exclusively to the movie. All of the other extras are spread across the four accompanying DVDs in the collectors' edition.
John, I haven't watched the movie itself yet, but I've skimmed through a few minutes on my PC, and it looks pretty staggeringly incredible. The colors are vivid to the point where it's kind of unreal, and detail and definition are both first-rate. I get the sense from that skim that there's some noise reduction but not to the point where it ravages the image. (There's still plenty of film grain, although it's unintrusive.) The shots heavy on optical effects haven't aged well at all.
I'll have a review up this weekend.

folks over at blu-ray.com also had hissy fits too, but from what a few have seen first hand - it's nowhere as bad as the originally poster had made it out to have been.

Re: The Ten Commandments up for pre-order 3/29/11 at Amazon
I was apparently wrong about there only being 2 BDs. I guess there are 3...the third one's mixed in with the DVDs.
* Commentary
* Feature-length making-of doc
* 2 minute newsreel
* Trailers
* 1923 silent version of The Ten Commandments - also includes Hand-Tinted Footage of the Exodus and Parting of the Red Sea Sequence, Two-Color Technicolor Segment
* Photo Galleries for both films
The package itself is what's really incredible. It's a wide box...about the same dimensions as the Warner collectors' editions of Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz. There's a transparent cover with the title and Charlton Heston on it. The box itself has lenticular animation of the Red Sea. The sea 'parts' when you open it, and inside are some art reproductions, a hardcover book, and a plastic case in the shape of the stone tablets. Those open with the 2 BDs on one side and the 3 DVDs and 1 BD (stacked into two columns) on the other.

Man, that collector's set is almost too hilariously overdone to pass up. One of my favorite movies, too. Watched it every year as a kid. I'll probably just end up with the plain blu-ray, though.
This Amazon video shows you the packaging details of the collector's set:

That looks awesome. I'm definitely getting the limited edition. But I'm going to wait until the set discounts to about $45 - just like the price I bought Gone with the Wind, Wizard of Oz, and Sound of Music LE set.

The set looks cool but I hope there'll be a release with all the discs (mainly the third Blu-ray of 1923 Ten Commandments) that's not in such an oversized box. I don't want the other fluff.

Packaging looks awesome.. but I wouldn't touch this one.. (just cause I think the movie sucks). Not based on Picture/Audio.

The original AVS captures did indeed look awful, but it turned out there was a mistake in their preparation, so that apparently accounts for that problem.
EDIT: Here are RAH's comments on the disc, for anyone who has not read them:

I just ordered the collector's set from DVD Empire using their 10% off code. Not sure where I'm going to store the huge box, but I couldn't pass it up.
