All the discs have those security squares inside them, don't they? Of course there is going to be shrinkage. That's the cost of being a big-box behemoth. But there comes a point where you are inconveniencing your customers.
Walk 6 aisles over and there will something far more expensive than a BD without any sort of security measure in place. It's dumb. I opened a DVD a couple weeks ago I've had wrapped on my shelf. It was shrink wrapped and had all three sides taped shut with the security tape. It was pretty infuriating to be punished for buying a product because a store cannot manage their loss prevention. |

Re: Black Swan (Aronofsky, 2010) -- 3/29/2011
I watched the standard DVD last night. Blockbuster didn't have the blu ray and I just wanted to check the flick out. I have a projector, an 84" screen, an upscaling player...all excellent equipment.
So I can say with some authority that the Black Swan DVD is the poorest quality DVD I've ever seen from Fox or any major studio. The blacks are completely crushed to the point that the shaddows appear green, the compression makes mud of the film's grainy look, the layer change was put in a place that completely fucks up one of the "scares", even the Fox Searchlight logo showed halos and shimmer. There is no excuse for a brand new title to look this bad. It gives fuel to my susupicion that studios degrade the quality of their DVD's on purpose. |

lol. I haven't entered the DVD forum a bit but yesterday I looked at their threads...wow...it's pretty desperate types of titles there.

uh, this is the blu-ray thread...
I thought you guys might like to know about the quality of the DVD, and my suspicions about the deliberate floating of poor quality transfers. Even the review here on DVD Talk has no data about the image or sound quality. Conspiracy of silence? |

I think you should watch the Blu-ray version before you state that the DVD is purposely being degraded.

also...those of us who got the BD of it probably didn't a get a DVD or didn't watch the DVD that is included in some exclusives. |

Re: Black Swan (Aronofsky, 2010) -- 3/29/2011
The movie was mostly shot on 16mm film and some consumer-grade HD cameras - it's not going to look nearly as good as most current movies.

Re: Black Swan (Aronofsky, 2010) -- 3/29/2011
The problems that he's talking about though don't sound like camera quality issues, but rather transfer issues. 16mm can still look AWESOME, even if it is just a DVD.

Read my post Popcorn Tree. I make it clear that I'm talking about the transfer, authoring, and compression. Regarding Super 16: A lot of people don't realize that films like The Queen, Saw, and Leaving Las Vegas were shot on 16mm. It can be almost indistinguishable from 35mm. The look of the Wrestler and Black Swan is achieved not just by choosing 16mm but by using faster stock and less light. It doesn't have to look grainy, it can look very smooth. Anyway, the DVD looks like shit, so shitty I'd call it incompetant, so incompetant that I'd suspect it was done on purpose. |

Yet, a sizable portion of this very thread has been concern over buying the Target exclusive combo pack precisely because it includes a red cover. Go figure.

I must have lucked out with mine...no shrink-wrap stuck to the spine, and the Target sticker came off without much problem.

Re: Black Swan (Aronofsky, 2010) -- 3/29/2011
Considering a blind buy of this...almost did, but I couldn't see the exclusive one at Target...

Go figure.

Re: Black Swan (Aronofsky, 2010) -- 3/29/2011
I got lucky in that I didn't get any shrinkwrap stuck to the spine, but it looks like that sticker will be hanging around for awhile. Still, getting superior packaging (no eco-crap) and a DVD I probably won't use for cheaper than the regular version in most other stores counts as a win in my book.
