How will GWTW be displayed on my LCD?

I wanted to get my mom the GWTW blu ray Scarlett edition but she despises the "black bars" on Older Disney br's. How will the movie in the link below be displayed on a 42" LCD?

There will be "black bars" to the left and right of the picture.

It will be shown as it should be: with black bars on the sides.

That said, you can always set the TV to stretch the image. Somewhere an angel will lose its wings but hey.

It's so funny... In the past, people used to whine about black bars on the top and bottom when viewing widescreen movies on a 4:3 set. Now people are whining about black bars on a widescreen set for 4:3 movies. Wow.

This seems to be a common complaint of folks from a certain generation. My Dad stretches the picture to fill his screen, because he doesn't want those black bars on the sides. I've tried and tried to explain the distortion of the image which results from this, but he claims he can't see anything different.

Maybe she should be playing her BDs on a 4:3 CRT

...and cable channels often crop scope ratio movies to 1.78. Ain't life grand?

I personally hate it when people display 4:3 or 1.37:1 content in "Stretch-o-Vision." Even when my kids watch children's DVDs of 4:3 TV programs, I make sure that they watch it with the black bars on the sides, not stretched to fit the screen. I am going to do my best to raise OAR aficionados!

I think you are supposed to watch the picture part of the screen not the black bars. I could be wrong though. Maybe you should install movable mattes on the TV as they will never be able to watch any of the older movies in 4:3 now.

My mom's 56 and would be mortified if her Gone With the Wind BD was stretched to fit the frame of her television

Wait a minute, freedom of choice? Not likely, everyone needs to watch movies as DVDTalkers dictate!

My uncle stretches EVERYTHING... even the native 16x9 programming. He is also hooked up via composite cable so I tend to just look the other way when I go over there.

My parents are even wose...they zoom in on the image to fill the screen. I always ask them if they are ever interested in seeing old movies where people don't have lobotomies.

This is why a license should be required to operate any video equipment.

It is funny to see this go full circle. First folks hated letterbox, now they hate side bars. I wonder how many now regret buying fullscreen DVDs?

For movies shot in 2:35, do they just zoom it in to "remove" the bars?

Re: How will GWTW be displayed on my LCD?

People who complain about black bars (non-anamorphic problems excluded) don't deserve to own DVD or Blu-Ray players.

If your parents drove their car everywhere in reverse because they didn't know how to properly shift into drive, would you try to correct them, or just let them wallow in their ignorance?

Then why are you posting if you're above it all?
