No offense, but I am really glad I just rented this movie instead of giving it a blind buy. I haven't felt this insulted by a film in a long time. What a manipulative, pretentious pile of crap. And I say that as a huge fan of The Fountain!

Carey Mulligan plus I recall Phillips and Scott on At the Movies giving this a great review plus it being a sci-fi movie means this is a must blind buy for me.

I can understand not liking the movie (I found it disappointing), but manipulative? I can't even fathom in what way the movie could be described as manipulative.

I blind bought this mostly because it didn't look like Netflix was going to have it right away and the price was decent at 19.99.
I wish I would have waited for them to get it.
It was OK, but I didn't feel the least bit of emotion for the characters or their situation. This kind of film should be right in my wheelhouse but something was not there for me.
Part of it might be I just don't find Knightley very good at all in anything really. I recognize Mulligan is talented, but there's something about there I don't really care for either. Garfield was kind of "eh" too.
So with a better cast this might have done a lot more for me. I did like the score.
And now to Amazon Marketplace.

Well I'm not going to debate on that. For me $20 is fair for a new release movie like this (or any new release for that matter). I see it as a way to encourage studios to release more films like this.

This was a blind buy for me. I had already read and loved the book. I thought the movie was excellent. I watched it with my mother and sister, and they both loved it as well.

Maybe manipulative is the wrong word. I think that reaction was the overuse of stringed instruments and such in order to try and invoke an emotional response. For example, I find a scene to usually resonate much more strongly when there's no music at all. In this, i felt like the music acted almost like a laugh track, but in this case to tell me when to be sad. "This is a sad part, be sad now!" The cinematography was beautiful though, and I thought the kids did a great job for the first third. I'm also not a Keira Knightley fan, so that didn't help matters. I didn't even know she was in it until she showed up (went in blind).

I agree. I watched it the other day and thought it was fantastic. Wasn't too sure going in but at the end I loved it. Reminded me in some ways of Atonement (another favorite of mine).

Unfortunately it seems the worst a movie does, the uglier the blu-ray/dvd cover -- they only have star power to go off of.

I love this cover, too -- but for the life of me, I can't get it to print full size. When my printer is set at 100% (laser and inkjet), it prints smaller than BD size. Regardless, I hadn't intended to buy this, but after hearing praise in this thread, and researching it further, it seems like a movie that I won't be able to resist. It's on its way from Amazon.

Oh for fuck's sake people, can we get past the DVD cover and discuss the actual film!?
Just got it from Nextfilm tonight and the first thing that came to my mind was......
WORST.....TRAILER......EVER.............!!!! I haven't read the book yet so I had no idea
what the story was about. Even more so after that trailer. The movie was so beautiful,
sad and tragic. And Mulligan absolutely carried the film. How she didn't get a Best Actress
nomination for her work is beyond me. The cinematography was also great.
