The HD audio track is the key for me, as well. GORGEOUS Trevor Jones score. Love the way his music sounds on the Angel Heart Blu-ray.

kind of annoyed they couldn't post a screen grab of the lady in the lake with Excalibur with the blood red sun behind her - most iconic shot in the film.

can someone post it once the disc gets releases next week?? I want a screensaver on my computer of that shot.

I'd like to see that myself. Or if someone can tell me how to make a screen shot of the movie on a Mac, i'll do it myself.

This is making me want to watch it right now. I could just pull out the DVD but meh...the BD is only days away.

Re: Excalibur Blu 03/08/11

Just got this today and on it was a sticker that said "New! Remastered for blu-ray with 6x the resolution of DVD." Can anyone compare to the old HD DVD to see if this is a new transfer or not? It's still in 1.85:1 frame. So they haven't fixed that.

I, too, would love to see some 1080p screencaps of this so I can judge the PQ.

Re: Excalibur Blu 03/08/11

what is the correct OAR for this? Is it not 1:85:1?

It's at least a new encode, being AVC rather than VC1

1.85:1, not 1:85:1.

There is speculation that, being a British film, the OAR was 1.66:1. If that's the case, it still would have been projected theatrically in the U.S. at 1.85:1, because 1.66:1 isn't used here.

Started watching it last night, and finished this morning. This is the best I have seen this look. Is it perfect? no. If you hate grain you will still hate this transfer.

I wish Netflix carried this. I hate the fact that they almost never upgrade catalog titles from DVD to Blu-ray.

Re: Excalibur Blu 03/08/11

I popped this in and went to the scene Giles was talking about and noticed something I had never noticed in the previous 130 viewings of this movie (I'm serious about the number). When Perceval goes to the lake the second and final time to return Excalibur, there is a swarm of bugs around him and his horse. So the detail is improved, but it's still a very grainy film.

I can't believe Best Buy has this priced $10 over the list price.

That sticker is being slapped on everything now (I see it alot at retail stores). Just trying to get the attention of shoppers.

Infact, one of my Blu-rays from Best Buy had the "Let us Install it - Geek Squad" stickers on it.

Yeah...

Here's something I just noticed for the first time. It occurs after Lancelot and Guinevere wake up in the forest and discover Excalibur, thus becoming aware that Arthur knows about their love affair. When Lancelot runs off, in the background immediately to the left of Guinevere, you can see what appears to be a second human figure running into the distance.

Anyone have an explanation for this?

It's visible in the following youtube clip at about 4:46...keep an eye on the forest background immediately to the left of Guinevere.

Re: Excalibur Blu 03/08/11

I found some HD screencaps. It's not as bad as Predator or the horrendous job that was done on Ten Commandments (good lord, that was awful), but it was really bad. They wiped out so much of the grain that they took a lot of the details with it. Again, not as bad as Predator, but they could've done a much better job with this amazing movie. Looking at the screencaps, there's just something wrong with it that you can't really put your finger on. There's just something off about it. It's not the worst I've seen, but it's pretty close. The dvd is definately the better transfer, though. It's just gritter, which makes the movie more enjoyable.

Yep, it's either a rabbit or a fawn. Both of which can be seen a few shots before when they're making out all nudey... the rabbit is at the far left of the screen and the fawn at the far right. Lancelot is a friend of nature.

Are you in the right thread, 'cause this film is full of grain.

Re: Excalibur Blu 03/08/11

Yeah, but not as much as the dvd has. They went just a bit too far with the DNR. Like I said, it's not on the level of Predator or T2, but the blu-ray doesn't seem to look as good as it should. Too much grain was erased.

Or it could be a Munchkin hanging himself.

I looked at it again and when it first appears, it does appear rather rabbit-like, as someone mentioned. As it runs off, it looks more like a large animal though. Someone suggested deer...that's possible too.

I am now convinced it's an animal though, as I have noticed the other animals in the background during these sequences. When I first saw it, I had visions of it being some crew member who didn't realize he was on camera or something.

You sure that's really grain on the DVD, or video noise caused by the low resolution and poor compression?

I don't have either disc, but it seems dubious to use a DVD as a reference for how much grain a movie should have.

Also, the controversy over The Ten Commandments has been debunked as a user issue. Just another failure of screen shot analysis.
