I guess Criterion only has the DVD distribution rights to Dazed, not the BD. I can't believe it's coming up on five years since Criterion's Dazed and Confused DVD was released. (June 6, 2006)

I'll be getting for sure

Blue Crush
Dazed and Confused
Fast Times at Ridgemont High

and maybe

Billy Madison
Happy Gilmore
Animal House

That's what I initially thought as well, but then Criterion announced their release of Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas in April.

Criterion and Universal have a good working relationship, and while I don't see Do The Right Thing getting revisited (which is a shame, since the color timing is messed up, ruining an otherwise flawless transfer), F&L shows that titles such as Dazed & Confused (if it ends up being a straight port of the Flashback Edition) and Traffic could still be Criterion candidates.

Re: New wave of Universal catalog releases

Yeah, I would suspect that Universal and Criterion cut identical deals as to DVD with some of these titles; the "Flashback" single-disc Dazed is still in-print and widely available, concurrently with Criterion's.

Might be time to upgrade this. My DVD is the old full-screen version that came out when Universal was releasing their DVD's in CD jewel cases. Actually, I think the same goes for The River Wild...

Best Buy has an end cap with some Universal catalogs and The River Wild is one of them. They're $9.99 a pop.

Re: New wave of Universal catalog releases

If you want a lot of these titles and are on a budget I recommend getting the HD DVD versions on e-Bay.

There are several lots of HD-DVD Universal titles where you can get 50 titles for $50-$60. Some of the titles are titles that are not on Blu-ray and may never be like Mobsters, Streets of Fire, American Me, Cat People etc.

In my area, HD DVD players can be found used for around $20-$40.

Might want to take this with a grain of salt, but:

Now that just brings down my day. Even if it's not the best Hitchcock film, more Hitchcock on Blu-Ray can only be a good thing...

Yup, and we have no idea what his source is. Still, some intriguing possibilities on that list.

Re: New wave of Universal catalog releases

There's a bunch of things that interest me, if this turns out to be legit.

I figured the classic monster films for a long, long shot, but considering they will soon release another film from the same era (All Quiet on the Western Front), I'm willing to entertain the possibility that they may finally come out.

The Spielbergs are probably accurate. Next year is E.T.'s thirtieth, so it makes sense. And Steven previously said Jaws is in the works.

Re: New wave of Universal catalog releases

"Blu combo" means BD+DVD+DC, right? I'm hoping Uni is going to be embracing flippers again in 2012.

Still, nothing on this list seems outside the realm of possibility. Lots of wanted titles on there.

Re: New wave of Universal catalog releases

Yeah, I'll wait until a more credible source mirrors that list. But if true, there's plenty I'd likely purchase. And I'll pay whatever their asking for the Monsters set on day 1. Hopefully it'll be similar to the DVD box set Universal released several years ago.
