more 96, 192kHz blurays!, please??
let me preface this thread by stating the Akira bluray was a completely amazing sound 'experience' that hadn't wowed me since I first heard DTS laserdiscs (and that was lossy sound, but it still packed a wallop). The trebles were ear piercing, the bass tight, and the sonic soundscape utterly amazing. For standard 48kHz discs 'sound' is a mixed bag some sound excellent, but the Akira bluray is the pinnacle of what and how a bluray 'should' sound like.
Here's a list of what's currently available, and as one can tell, it tends to be music concerts. For blurays to be touting the best in video AND audio, it becomes all too apparent that the 'best' in sound has truly yet to be implemented for movie soundmixes. 192khz, 24-Bit (4 titles) : --------------------------- Akira (Bandai) Trondheimsolistene: Divertimenti (2L) Nordic Sound: 2L Audiophile Reference (2L) Dena Piano Duo: Mozart/Grieg vol.II (2L) --------------------------- 96khz, 24-Bit (13 titles) : --------------------------- Baraka Between The Lines: Sara Bareilles Live At The Filmore Celine Dion: A New Day. Live In Las Vegas Chris Botti: Live With Orchestra And Guests Chronos Dave Matthews And Tim Reynolds: Live At Radio City Ellen Sejersted Bodtker: SONaR John Mayer: Where The Light Is Nature's Journey Queen Rock Montreal And Live Aid The Cure: Trilogy The Police: Certifiable Within Temptation: Black Symphony AC/DC: No Bull Perhaps Love Tchaikovsky Symphony 6 Berliner Philharmoniker |

The problem is that most Hollywood productions are just not done at that high of a frequency. The vast majority of Hollywood sound is mastered and stored at 24-bit/48 kHz, meaning most films on Blu-rays with better sound than that are just upconverted in nature. Music is an exception, as many recording studios do produce their music at that level of sound quality. You can add Leonard Cohen At The Isle Of Wight to the list for 24-bit, 96 kHz audio on Blu-ray.

You can add the Neil Young Archives Vol. 1 boxset to the 192khz, 24-Bit list. Of course, this is also a music title, but also with video footage (and his movie "Journey Through The Past") and continuing "updates" of new material through BD-Live downloads.

Pretty sure the Nine Inch Nails "Ghosts I - IV" Blu-ray has at least a stereo 96khz, 24-Bit track.

I'll have to check my copy of Dire Straits Alchemy, as it probably belongs on this list too. Video quality is nothing to write home about, but the 5.1 mix sounds very nice.

The great thing about Baraka is that not only is the sound awesome but it's an 8k scan so the whole viewing experience is amazing.
