It was expected. The Kubrick Estate has been loosening it's grip a lot lately. TCM played Fear and Desire last year. The only surprise is that this isn't Criterion. There was a pretty big expectation that it would be them.

I personally think Fear and Desire is a pretty lousy film, but it'll still be awesome to finally get the complete Kubrick filmography on home video.

....why aren't they from CC? I was under the impression that they would be. I'd swear I even read something from them on it.

But then, there also was speculation that Kino would get it:

I'm not surprised Criterion isn't putting this out. For their Paths of Glory and The Killing discs, they got the participation of the Kubrick estate in its supplements. Putting this out could be seen as a betrayal on their part.

I totally get Kubrick not wanting something that he feels is not of good quality and was just a youthful exercise being released as a "Stanley Kubrick film". It's probably exploitive and lame for Kino to put it out... but I'll buy it on day one. At some point, long after an artist is gone, it's time to preserve everything for its historical value.

Yeah, Criterion may not want to jeopardize their relationship with the Kubrick Estate.
Kino's press release makes note of Kubrick's attempts to suppress the film:
http://www.kinolorber.com/news.php?news_id=141
Wikipedia notes that the film is in the public domain. I'm guessing its copyright wasn't renewed in 1981.

It is remarkable that FEAR AND DESIRE exists today, in any form. As Kubrick found his voice as a filmmaker, he grew more self-conscious about his early work, and preferred that it remain buried in the past. On those rare occasions when a print would surface, Kubrick took measures to halt-or at least limit-public screenings of the film.

It was my understanding that his estate controlled Fear and Desire completely. That is why it has been successfully supressed. It was my understanding that this release by KINO was due to the family consenting to release it.

Fear and Desire opened in 1953 in Rockefeller Center but since then, even film scholars haven't been able to see it. The George Eastman House in Rochester recently restored a print and Bruce Goldstein of New York's Film Forum, jumped at the chance to show the young director's debut... But Stanley Kubrick hates the film and to keep it off the screen he threatened Film Forum with copyright violations, even though Fear and Desire is in the public domain. Through a Warner Brothers' publicist, Kubrick called his first feature 'a bumbling amateur film exercise'.
I think it's been suppressed for so long due to respect for Kubrick's wishes, along with a relative lack of copies of the film.

Re: Lolita and Barry Lyndon coming in 2011
Are supplements announced yet? I would really love a documentary on how Stanley Kubrick tried (and almost succeeded in) buying back all the copies of the film and destroyed them in an attempt to completely wipe the film off the face of the earth.
You could also go into the fact that he destroyed anything left on the cutting room floor for all his films that he did not feel was up to snuff so that no one could ever see it.
He's probably spinning in his grave right now.

Re: Lolita and Barry Lyndon coming in 2011
Hey, everybody! Have you ever said to yourself sometime this year "Wouldn't it be really cool if another Kubrick box set was released?" Well don't worry, because Warners has heard your hypothetical question and answered:
Same exact content as before along with a 78-page hardcover book and a new bonus disc with the following documentaries:
- Kubrick Remembered: A new look into the Kubrick archives, with special appearances by Christiane Kubrick. Featuring never-seen footage of Stanley's works, his house and his film production facilities.
- Stanley Kubrick in Focus: Spielberg, Soderbergh, Stone, Friedkin, Scorsese and others tell how Kubrick's directorial style influenced them and how his unique style was developed.
- Once Upon a Time... A Clockwork Orange: Co-written by critic Michel Ciment and featuring interviews with a psychologist and a sociologist, this a wonderfully unusual cine-documentary that focuses more on the titular movie's historical context and philosophy than on its production and reception. The documentary benefits from archival audio commentary by the late Stanley Kubrick, who offers his rationale for making the controversial, devilishly prescient proto-punk cult classic: "Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven."
Nov. 4th is when it hits shelves...oh, whoops--sorry about that, it's an Amazon exclusive.

I already have this set (which I picked up for $60 back in 2011), so unless these are brand-new transfers (which I assume they're not), I have zero interest.

Dr Strangelove is included which is good for someone who hasn't picked up the previous Kubrick set since Sony let the standalone release go OOP for some reason.

I'm good with the Kubrick releases I already have. New extras just don't do it for me anymore unless there's something incredibly compelling about them (like the deleted scenes for Fire Walk With Me).
