Was Moana very popular? I've never heard of it and to look it up.

Well, it's a Disney movie that made a half a billion dollars worldwide ($250 million in the US) and nominated for best animated film at the Oscars. So I would say yes, it's a popular movie that should sell well.

I guess it probably will for DVD, as that format covers a very wide market of consumers. But I wonder if this is the type of movie that will sell well on BD. BD usually sells well for big action flicks, comic-book movies and even Pixar movies... but Moana seems geared towards a younger audience than Pixar and probably leans more towards girls than boys. Can't see that audience caring about BD. I could be wrong though - I'm not really up on the whole animated thing.

I saw the characters on cereal boxes, but don't recall seeing a trailer or ads for it. Then again, I don't particularly care about Disney movies, nor do I have kids, so I'm not the demo Disney was aiming at.

I don't have kids or care about Disney animated movies, but I've always been aware of them, like Wall-E or Cars, or whatever.
But Moana never blipped on my radar at all. I saw no commercials for it, or trailers, or anything else. I might have seen some toys stacked up in a store, but that's it.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat.

The internet and our chosen apps think they know what we want to see and that's all they show us.
Years ago, if you had no interest in Disney movies, you were still very aware of their place in pop culture through TV ads, newspaper ads, billboards, bus stop posters, store promotions etc.
All of those mediums are slowly disappearing and it seems our peripheral vision has narrowed in the process.

I think it's true that the more we become "internet-centric", the less things we see outsides of our "favorites".

Back on topic, how are disc sales in other countries? Some posters on blu-ray.com make it sound like they're doing better in Europe (like France and Germany), but at the same time, also say the sales aren't "great."

The only thing I vaguely remember about Moana was that some PC warriors were protesting something about it. Kid movies these days come out month after month. Since virtually every studio is now churning them out, they tend to blur together unless they come from an established brand or pop like Frozen.

I can understand the increased focus on kid's movies, as in my case they are the type I'll more likely see in theaters or buy on Bluray, because of grandkids. And funny they seem to be a lot more entertaining than before with the adult humor (or it could be kid humor too and kids these days are so advanced that they can understand more previously "grownup" humor than when I was young). Some of the kids programs on Netflix are hilarious, such as SheZow. I really think they are packing in the adult humor, more than ever, to make it more family friendly and appealing to all ages.

Best Buy Q4 physical media sales plummet almost 19%

Yeah, as far as the videogame thing - that is mostly Best Buy's own fault.
I haven't bought a game from them in ages because, A) they rarely stock or put out new release on release day, and I don't fee like asking for one, and B) what they actually do put out are just pieces of paper inside plastic boxes - it's just off putting. Combine that with the fact that physical discs have almost no advantages over digital (the entire game has to install onto your hard-drive, regardless of disc or digital), blu-ray game disc failure rate is pretty high, and what happened to instruction books anyways?
So if I want a physical copy of a game, I never get it at BB, but instead at Target or ToysRUs, or amazon, mostly because BB fucked themselves in this regard.
If they did the same to movies, I'd never buy movies from them either.

I can imagine physical game sales are sinking faster because the advantages of digital games are much more obvious than with movies. I wouldn't consider buying a physical game now.
Another point regarding physical movies, it was a bad quarter for sales everywhere, not just BB. So there YoY figure just illustrates the trend everywhere and is not a sign that BB is underperforming compared to others.
