It's still too early to call but we may be approaching Peak TV, a scenario where TV sales stop growing and, instead, slowly decline over time. This is a result of young people deciding that they don't need a TV when they move out of their parents home. The market becomes defined by existing TV owners replacing their sets when theirs malfunction and a small number of enthusiasts. Similar to what happened to the PC market.

I have to imagine that as soon as ESPN and other sports content becomes available OTT, this trend will accelerate. Needless to say, this is more headwind against Blu-ray.
College kids will still want a TV to play XBox and Playstation.

I'm in college right now. No one has TVs. Consoles are hooked up to computer monitors.

Even after they leave college they spend an inordinate amount of time playing video games.

Another data point:

Ratings are seeing big drops this season as young people skip on TV.

(sorry for these janky links but I'm too new to post proper ones)

While I'm sure that's part of it, I think has just as much to do with an extremely weak crop of new network shows, more quality cable programming than any one person can possibly keep up with, and an archaic ratings system that measures only a fraction of a show's actual audience. I mean seriously, other than sports and other "events", who watches live tv anymore?

With so many good scripted shows (subjectively) on tv these days on both network and cable, there's just TOO MUCH stuff to keep up for me.

Personally, I'm using "live tv" as a gauge of how much I like a particular tv show. If I'm not willing to watch a particular show live (or with a 20-minute delay), then probably it is time to drop that particular show.

So basically I'm using "live tv" as an easy weedout filter, to reduce my viewing schedule to something manageable.

I don't remember the last time I watched live TV... Super Bowl and Oscars are probably the only ones.

I don't watch anything live. Even sports I watched delayed via DVR in order to skip commercials (if I get caught up to live then I'll just pause it for 15 minutes or so to build up another buffer, cause I hate commercials).

I watch sports live and if I'm just kind of relaxing for few minutes I will turn on the tv and channel surf, but any scripted show I watch is via DVR. The Americans is my favorite show on tv right now and I don't think I could even tell you what day it's on.

Before the NFL season started, the last time I watched "Live TV" was the Super Bowl.

For me "Live TV" = NFL. That's it.

With the exception of the playoffs and super bowl, I DVR the football games. I can start the recording at 1, sit down about 2:30, FF through the commercials and I'll be finishing just about the time the game ends live. Sometimes I watch the last 2 - 5 minutes live.

I fast forward through hundreds of baseball games each season. You can watch two or three complete games practically every night by eliminating the time between pitches.

That's the one thing I can't do - watch recorded sports.
I can't watch something knowing the outcome's been decided already.

Same, i'll never watch a recorded sports game. At that point its just as easy to go online and watch highlights.

I listen to baseball on the radio. My DVR is full of history, science, and Seth MacFarlane adult swim.

Not surprised in the least, as I've been saying for YEARS that presentation-wise, network TV has become an unwatchable mess. People have got to at least be tired of the increased number of commercials by now.

Every other show you watch has been decided already also. Sometimes months earlier.

Yes, and shows aren't real life... they're stories... and I'm not cheering for any particular outcome.
I'd rather experience real life in real time.

Sports are not real life. They are just games. Jesus.

I don't care about sports, but if I did I'd want to see them live. I've heard of people who recorded games and didn't want to know who won until they watched them.

re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - #2, but we try harder

I don't watch sports, and I never watch anything live either. That was one of the biggest reasons I dropped cable and went Netflix/streaming only. I found that I never watch anything live. I would just DVR an entire season and then binge watch it all when the season was done. I don't like watching one episode per week. I like to binge everything. So for that Netflix is much better and cheaper than cable. Why pay $100 for cable when I can do the same thing with Netflix for a tenth of the price. The only reason in my mind to pay a premium price for cable is if you absolutely have to have a new episode as soon as it airs. Otherwise cable is pointless.
