And you know what's weird about that? Name me one other way to pass the time a guy might have that is basically being taken away with him, rather than he chooses to move on to something else. I'd be fine collecting digital too if the studios would just assure me that they're not going to take my collection away at some point...
At least Hollywood's media still has a retail presence of some kind. I am not sure what retail stores are going to do with their media sections now that CD sections are getting smaller each year and movie sales are on the wane.

Here in Canada, Best Buy and Future Shop has been going into appliances and furniture. Heck, I saw them advertising jewelry recently in their flyers.

See but Blu's retail presence is what's killing it for me. Sure I can get something released in the last 3 years but beyond that, forget it. It's become an order from Amazon and get it in a week business, which drives me to just get the digital copy with the click of a button instantly.

True. A classic Catch - 22. Retailers can't afford to devote huge shelf space to a low profit item, yet by reducing inventory to such low levels, it eliminates the impulse buys and the runs to the store to see what's on sale. It then makes digital an attractive right now alternative

I used to be retail-or-die in the DVD era, only ordering online when there were crazy sales. When cult/horror releases started to be more troublesome to find in stores, I started buying those online...and when you start buying some movies online essentially every week, it's pretty easy to make the move to buying every movie I'm interested in online. Admittedly, Amazon Prime has made that a lot more convenient with street date delivery.

Frozen has just become the #1 selling BR of All Time:
1. Frozen = 7,460,592 Units Sold (1 year of sales will be on Mar 18, 2015)
2. Avatar = 7,376,176 Units Sold (5 years of sales will be on Apr 22, 2015)
3. Despicable Me 2 = 5,761,489 Units sold (Just wanted to show the gap between #1 and #2 to the sales for the #3 title, big gap.)

So, Frozen passed Avatar in 3 years less time.

When Frozen hits it's 1 year make, it will have over $350 million in sales for both BR and DVD combined.
-That number is like when DVD was at it's strongest

The most surprising thing for me is that #3 is Despicable Me 2, seems like a rather random movie to be up there.

Why? It's not as good as the first, but it was still fun in it's own right. And the Minions have become meme characters in their own rights.

I think it's a combination of entertaining and highly merchandisable movie released at just the right time.

EDIT: And when I say "right time," I don't mean cleverly selected release date for marketing purposes, but the right time in the lifecycle of BD.

Not to speak for joltman, but I suspect it's about how the highest grossing movies theatrically don't necessarily have the highest grossing video releases (and vice versa), not really a judgement of the movie itself. Quite a few movies from the BD era -- even just over the past 5 years, really -- have outgrossed Despicable Me 2.

A really good example is the Star Trek reboot. It's the fifth highest grossing BD of all time, despite not ranking terribly high on the list of domestic box office juggernauts over the past 5-6 years. It's pretty interesting to see how different the theatrical / home video grosses lists look.

Where are these numbers found at? I was always curious how some of the larger series did on Blu Ray (Dark Knight, Hunger Games, Twilight, etc).

Nothing on the quality of the movie, just that if I had to guess what the third movie would have been, DM2 wouldn't have been on my list at all. I know the minions are pretty popular, but I just didn't think that movie was that popular.

There's some really interesting numbers on there, like:

Watchmen is just below Star Wars The Complete Saga. One of the "worst" comic movies is just below one of the most beloved film sagas ever made. Wonder how much better that SW set would have done with the original versions? And both are *way* under Ted. WTF?

I would like to believe that it's because of those evil Special Editions, but I'm not foolish enough to actually think so. It is odd, especially if they are totaling overall sales. If it is for a particular year, and obviously it makes a lot more sense, but even then there are irregularities.

Also, the Star Wars set is way overpriced. I've never seen it new for under $79 ( I bought a used copy 2 years ago for $53).

Also, that is specifically for the 6 film set, so the 3 film OT set would be counted separately.

I wonder if Fox will have a fire sale right before the rights revert to Disney.

I think Lucas would rather shred any remaining copies than see his product devalued in a last-minute blow-out of DVDs and Blu-rays.

I'm sure Disney has it in the contract that Fox won't be able to do this either.

I imagine that is specifically prevented in the licensing agreement. It's rumored that type of clause is in the licensing deal with Twilight Time, which is why you haven't seen them clearance discs at drastic discounts.

I predict a huge bump next week since Fright Night came out. It's all the rage.

Alas, I don't think Twilight Time's sales are counted in those numbers.
