Does anyone still rent physical movies outside of those vending machines like Red Box?

And I think it's been years since I've seen anyone even notice one of those machines, let alone rent or return a movie from one.

All of the video rental stores in my area have closed down, and I don't think the grocery/convenience stores, that would rent out a small selection of movies, even do that anymore.

Yeah I've noticed that too. T-Mobile still gives occasional free rental codes for T-Mobile Tuesday, but everytime I check their app, there is nothing new. The kiosk is still in my local Walmart market, but like you said, it's probably on death watch. 2 other markets near me dumped the kiosks. They must have no money to acquire new releases.

I don't think in 2024 there is any option now to rent physical discs aside from the apparent dying Red Box or getting them for free at your library.

It's basically $20 PVOD rentals (if you want them bad enough) or $6 digital rentals later on.

Was wondering if anyone was using Redbox lately. I took advantage of when they had codes for free rentals every week, but that ended years ago. Never seen anyone using a machine recently, before there’d be people lined up which was inefficient when someone ahead was looking through the movies and someone else had to wait just to return one.

I just looked at the Red box kiosks closest to me online and they're full of old movies from 2-3 years ago.

I googled and couldn't find any video rental options locally outside of Red Box.

There still seem to be a few out there like Scarecrow in Seattle (which seems to be operating as a non-profit), but I don't think there are any more chains, just a handful on independent places. I think all of the Family Video stores closed during the pandemic.

I went to the Scarecrow website and looked up a few obscure titles, and they had all of them on either VHS, LD, or DVD.

Movie Madness in Portland and Orbit DVD in Asheville are a couple others. But yeah, the national chains are gone, and I’m not sure how many (if any?) regional chains survived.

Family Video was the last chain still around. All of their stores closed during the Pandemic. A lot of them are Dollar Generals now.

Just glad the threat to price DVDs for rental never happened- new release VHS tapes were priced at $100 to gouge the rental stores, and Fox had threatened to do the same with DVD. It was said that Netflix wouldn’t have been able to survive if that happened also (which seeing where they are now may have been a good thing.)

I've only rented from the library. But even that has curtailed last few years with streaming (even the library's own free streaming services like Hoopla).

It would be interesting to know what license agreement existed between the studios and Netflix for content. The studios almost seemed to wave the white flag in the face of dwindling DVD sales and "lost" sales due to piracy.

I guess they felt Netflix offered them a glimmer of hope (and potential growth) with an emerging new technology in streaming and granted them a fairly risk-free limited-time license on many of their titles.

Like so many popular tech companies, the bloated stock market evaluations seem to keep the dysfunctional business models afloat.

Some of us here hit those numbers back in the 2000s.

The pie charts I was posting are no longer being made.

Media Play News is posting pie charts of the top 50 sellers (rather than the market overall), and I could look into automating those.

I’ll do my best to help out! This chart is of the top 50 sellers:

And for a list of the top 20 titles (along with percentages of sales by format for each of them), click here.

I’ll work on a way to get this information automatically posted.

DVD still dominates even when the Top 50 are isolated.

Besides libraries and the few remaining video rental places, wonder who is buying all those dvd-only variants.

Walmart shoppers, I guess? I think I read that it has 45% of the home video marketshare, so DVD sales makes sense when you consider the average Walmart customer.

A lower price point, the ubiquity of DVD players, and the feeling that DVD is good enough for a lot of people are all probably pretty big contributors.
