Alive, yes... but well - not sure about that.
This is HMV's equivalent of Walmart's bargain-bin. And these are 4K releases They wouldn't be discounting them like this if they were selling well.
Seems like they're just trying to get rid of stock.

Oh for the love of God. It’s a Christmas sale and it’s select titles.

This is a first

I saw a Bronx Tale 4k on sale for $24.99 in my Amazon cart and it says "38% off Overstock?"

I see that too. I can't recall having seen "Overstock" before. It says it's a limited time deal, and it has a bar showing how much has been claimed (like a Lightning Deal). Currently, it's 58% claimed.

Ive heard conflicting info on whether HMV is doing well or not. I wish theyd open at least a few stores in the US since were so underserved now, but I thought they had some stores in Canada which all closed?

The HMV stores in Canada closed about 5 years ago. The store is still alive in Europe and in Japan.

It's my understanding HMV is hanging in there but not thriving. Basically what Best Buy would have been for us Americans about 10-12 years ago. Labels in Europe aren't actively plotting to kill off physical media like the studios did here in the States.

Japan has the last robust physical media market.

I've seen this before in HMV in Canada. They'll be shrinking their movie inventory even more.

I was in Tokyo in October and did visit Tower records. It's 7 stories. But, I would say the vast majority focused on music. CDs and Vinyls mostly. They had a lot of exclusive albums for the Japan market from American artists. DVDs and Blu-Rays were on 1 floor, but it was hardly a robust selection. And they are pretty expensive over there too. $30+ for BDs.

But, fortunately it's in a busy area and traffic was high. I ended up spending $135 on new music. I was more than happy to support music on physical media.

Probably! Oppenheimer was #1, and Barbie had a Black Friday bump to take the #2 spot. (Source)

If this from Bill Hunt at The Digital Bits is true, the death march for physical media in retail stores will increase:

Speaking of Walmart, some of our industry sources have informed us that starting in February, Walmart will only be “resetting” (aka stocking) new titles on its store shelves every other week. Apparently, Target already does this. So if you visit their store locations on street date, there are going to be times when you won’t find new titles on the shelves and you’ll have to ask store clerks to retrieve one from the stockroom for you (if they’re wiling). We’re hearing this is down to labor costs. In any case, we thought it was worth sharing for those of you who go hunting for new titles at Walmart and Target stores.

2025? Sometime around then is when it seems inevitable retail pulls completely out of physical media. Studios don't care, they got the lock-in they wanted with digital product.

Labor costs? Give me a break. If theyre not going to bother putting out new titles on release date then they arent serious about selling them. Might as well pre-order and have it shipped.

If you watch Shaun C. Phillips YouTube channel coolduder, he visits Target, Best Buy and Walmart every week hunting for new releases. Target is pretty depressing and Walmart and Best Buy’s shelves are so inconsistently stocked.

Yeah, waiting for him to just say I give up. If I had the skills, Id do a video about how pathetic media shopping has gotten here, showing whats now in places where stores used to be.

The UK division of HMV was gobbled up by Sunrise Records in 2019. The new owner kept the HMV nameplate on the retail outlets outside of canada. Not entirely clear how much of the old HMV UK debt was vacated in this transaction.

Previously Sunrise moved into many of the old HMV locations in canada in 2017.

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

I went to Sunrise Records when I traveled to Vancouver in 2022.

Nice little store. Reminded me a lot of Suncoast and The Wherehouse. They actually had a small tape cassette section as well. I think I have a few photos. I'll try to post them.

I bought 2 CDs. Top Gun Maverick soundtrack and Carrie Underwood's most recent album.

And they still have a bunch of location. Doesn’t seem like a dying chain.

I went to the Metropolis at Metrotown location in BC.

Cynical DVD Talk members seeing two straight weeks of positive BD sales.

It was bound to happen eventually. It's been over 15 years.
