I know, just a somewhat fun exercise.
I guess it's possible that nothing will break the streak until next year when a major title is released, and the increase would only be a minor one because it'll be compared to very low numbers from this year.

It's interesting just how consistent the numbers are, with about $18M to $20M every week. I would think there would be a bit more variation, but it seems like there's a small but consistent number of people out there buying discs each week.

I'll be curious to see how much Avatar The Way of Water moves the needle later this month.

They purposely crippled that by giving it a digital release more than a month ahead. Only new thing in the physical release will be 3D, it was speculated Avatar 2 would re-invigorate 3D at home but sadly that doesn't seem to be happening. I personally won't be buying it because it won't be in high frame rate, I normally buy every 3D title otherwise.

A bit surprised ant man didn’t help sales at all. There are people who just buy every MCU blu ray available but I suppose there aren’t enough.

I preordered the 3D of that from Japan since thatís the only way to get it. My general disc buying has gone WAY down as support of 3D has declined. If thatís how they want it then so be it.

Unless someone starts actually making and selling a 3d capable TV, home 3d is all but dead and has been for a number of years.

And if Avatar doesn't move the needle on sales, nothing is going to move it.

Avatar might sell a decent amount in 3D (compared to zero at least) even without me buying it, but those who donít care have already seen it on digital.

What's a decent amount? Are we counting the sales of the 3d discs in the hundreds or the tens?

I think the expected sales for any title is about 3000 just to make it worth releasing. Thatís nothing compared to the several million that big titles used to sell.

Where does this 3000 figure come from?

(ie. Besides conjuring it up magically out of thin air).

Yeah, I was going to say those limited editions are in the low thousands so that’s probably the point where economies-of-scale kick in.

So the few 3d discs that are released in the US are selling in the 3000 range?

I did see a little girl today beg her mother for the Super Mario movie on Blu-ray. First time I've seen that in years.

I was at somewhere like Target the other day and there was a young boy carrying around a copy, dancing around with it and all, like it was a joyous, religious rite.

Actually brought a smile to my face.

Anyone ever see a units based chart, rather than dollars based? I wonder how many more units than blue ray dvd still sells. I'm assuming the blue ray revenue includes uhd as well, correct?

What releases came out that caused the Blu-ray revenue to go up in that last chart? I don't watch many new movies at all.

The streak ends at 31 weeks for a decline in both formats.
I think Super Mario and John Wick were released during that week.

Overall decline is at 32 weeks now.

It's even more skewed when you look at units. As Blu-ray and UHD demand a premium price, the revenue numbers will always be tighter. Yes, UHD rolls up to Blu-ray.

For the chart above, the breakdown was:
Blu-ray 33.59%
DVD 66.41%
Unit Sales

That's about what I was expecting. Interestingly enough though, average costs for both dvd and blue ray have gone up over the past year, with dvd going up by a slightly higher percentage. I would have thought that if anything, blue ray would have gone up more.
