My parents had a garbage sale today and I put out some blu-rays and DVDs for a buck each. I sold all the DVDs quickly but there were several people who said they liked the movie but didn't have a blu-ray player. I still made $65 off of the DVDs.

Love that typo because it fits- I’ve never found anything at a gar(b)age sale even though I always stop at them.

Didn’t have a Blu-ray player to sell?

I think of the movie-related items I used to buy back in the 80s when the VHS tapes were too expensive to own; I would buy the tie-in novel, the movie poster, the press kit, the soundtrack album, clip-out the newspaper ads and reviews etc. That was a way for fans to connect to something they saw as a hobby.

As for the 99% majority, they really don't care. Most people stream movies with same regard as all of us did before the VCR was invented - just a fleeting form of entertainment transmitted through the airwaves to help pass the time.
I will also note a large generational divide. I'm one of the younger people on this forum, at 34. If I really love a movie, I'm basically fine owning just a digital copy.

You can't gaze lovingly at a digital copy or hold it in your arms.

I am getting to be more about "experiences" lately though, my next road trip I don't plan on buying much if anything, doing it more just for the trip itself.

This reminds me of the 20 or so Ultra-Violet Digital copies I had which were hosted by Flixster in Canada. Flixster went belly-up along with Ultra-Violet, leaving my beloved collection of 20 titles floating somewhere in cyberspace!

Do I really need to spend more time hunting them down so I can access the convenience of going all-digital?

I believe if you linked it to your ultraviolet account you still have them. If you linked to multiple they got tossed all around into other various services you might have linked, IIRC.

It was back in 2014 and I don't recall actually having an Ultra-Violet account, I just redeemed them and accessed them through Flixster. I'm sure if I dig deep enough I can probably figure out how to recoup them.

For the year or two I had them, I never actually watched them, so it's not a big loss. I feel bad for folks who redeemed all of their codes and then sold, gave-away or threw-out the discs and probably tossed-out their codes as well.

It looks like you had to actively migrate them to Google Play:
https://www.reddit.com/r/MoviesAnywh...play_now_live/

There was a special Flixster migration site, which no longer exists.

I mean, they had many ways to get the movies out of the dying service with ample time to do it. I had Flixster too in the USA, and everything got ported over to VUDU or something. It's been a while.

That's why you go with a Google-, Apple-, or Amazon-backed service

Surely it's been longer than that? I can't even remember the last time it wasn't pointing down.

Last time total disc sales increased was 11/5/22 when it went up a whopping 0.77% (ie. less than 1%)

https://forum.dvdtalk.com/hd-talk/57...l#post14193777

The previous time it increased was 10 weeks before that at 2.34%

Every week is sub-$20 Million. It wasn't that long ago when a lackluster week was around $75 Million.

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

Did some re-organizing yesterday and confirmed that I'm super out of shelf space. Already have a couple crates with overflow, I can't buy anything on a whim anymore (and there's hardly anyplace left to do that anyways), and I have just one shelf left that is even high enough to hold DVD cases, the rest are fitted for the shorter Blu-Ray cases.

The only must-haves coming out through this year are a few 3D titles and the Pet Shop Boys Blu-Ray set, which 99% sure won't be in any stores here, also have to order the latest South Park Blu-Ray but that's about it.

I dunno... maybe use a different criteria for whim purchases other than just running out of shelf space?

So 29 straight weeks now.
Any predictions on when the streak will end?

I don't know. Maybe donate crap you don't watch or probably never will watch to Goodwill or your local libraries? And no more impulse internet sale buys. Doesn't mean you dump 100 and buy 120 more to replace them.

It doesn't really matter. Any one week break would just be an outlier and not indicative of a larger trend reversing the decline of physical media sales.
