Remember the $1,000 VCR? It was some tech like S-VHS or something, but a Cool 'G' for a tape player back in the 80s and early 90s was a thing.

Here's a scary thought; the house is still there and it just sold for $1.9 million. All things being equal in cost, an equivalent VCR would cost $23,750!

All VCRs were very expensive. In the early days, we had to rent one every other weekend. It was in a huge plastic shell and weighed a ton. We'd get that about 3-4 tapes for the weekend. Did that for a while before we were able to buy one.
Same with the NES, we had to rent it before I saved up enough to buy my own.

I had a Panasonic S-VHS machine that I bought for $299 in the mid to late 90's. That's how I used to make my VHS copies from LD transfers since the resolution was basically the same from one to the other.

It's amazing that even as physical media sales continue to drop, BD still only makes up less than 40% most weeks.
In a couple months it'll be 16 years since BD was introduced and DVD still rules the nest.

Don't kid yourselves.
Most people still have don't have blu-ray players. There's probably a DVD player in most American households, but few have actually have blu-ray players. I am one of two people in my large family that I know of who watches blu-rays. Everyone else either has a DVD player, or a game system like a Playstation that can play blu-rays but is seldom used for that purpose.

This ^ !!!
Go to any nearby thrift shop (ie. goodwill, salvation army, etc ....), church rummage sales, etc .... They are littered with tons of discarded standalone dvd players, where many of these old dvd players do not even have an HDMI jack on the back.
For many years, many newer desktop and laptop computers do not even come with an cd/dvd optical disc drive.

For the longest time, BD was about 1/3 and DVD was about 2/3 of the pie. BD went up for a few years, but now it seems to have settled back pretty close to that 33% point.

It just dawned on me that I haven't come across this thread for a while.
It's been 6 months since anyone posted disc sales figures? Is this still being tracked? I'm curious to know how sales are looking now.

Would have been interesting to see the past few weeks as stores have continued to cut stock even more. At this point sales have to be hurting at least in part because there’s just no place left to buy these anymore. I would like to see the stores’ sales figures to see how much sales really dropped that made them do this. They are well on their way to just killing the industry now though- and Target doesn’t even have Target Ticket to fall back on now.

I suspect Target pulls the plug entirely on media next year, probably in Q1. No fixed shelving reserved, only cardboard standees. Best Buy still seems into using exclusives like SteelBooks to lure in rich collectors.

You can see these charts on the 'Revenue Report' link on Media Play News' homepage, and they're also posted in the Home Video Sales Thread on the other forum. I wrote a script to automatically fetch and post these going forward.

Thanks for posting the latest sales and the link to the other forum. Didn't know there was a thread there for it - not that I frequent that site anyways.
And yikes... looking at that other forum thread for the numbers in the last couple months, total disc revenue is almost always below 30m now.
And DVD still manages to outsell BD most weeks.
I wonder at what point it'll find a bottom. At 20m? 10m?

Here's everything since BuckNaked2k 's last post. And like I said earlier, these should be automatically posted in the forum every week from here on out.

Wow, the drop is more drastic than I anticipated. Studios and their retail partners have gotten their way by barely carrying anything in stores. We're almost at the point when the only market left for Blu-ray will be collectors. I'd imagine the numbers in foreign markets are exceedingly stronger.

"Wait for the DVD" became "Netflix and chill" several years ago.
The sales figures are reflecting this.
