Still lots of CDs at my local Best Buy, and people seem to be buying some of them here and there. But I'm sure they'll be gone soon enough - probably after Christmas.

Overall, CDs still sell way more than vinyl.

Well, I guess if you hold a smartphone close enough to your face, it can take up the same field of vision as sitting 10 feet away from a 60" screen.

And burn your eyes out. I'll take watching stuff on my 46" plasma over my 4.7" iPhone any day.

It's all relative. For the first half of 2015, 41.1 million CDs were shipped in the US. Compare this to 9.2 million LPs shipped during the same time. YOY, this represents a 27% decline for CDs, but a 43% BUMP for LPs! Will it last? Who knows.

Now remember, these numbers are dramatically less than the total units shipped during the glory days of the music industry back around 2000. However, at that time, legal downloads and streaming services did not exist, so the revenue has slowly shifted to new forms of media over time, although total revenue has fallen by about 50% since it's high water mark.

Well, yeah. I only spin vinyl, though.

re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - #2, but we try harder

I saw Furious 7 had some pretty solid sales in its first 2 weeks

Sold around 2.5M BD and DVD units and over $52.5M in disc/digital sales. Probably explains the jump in BD sales.

Two heavyweight titles last week, then a precipitous drop off.

Ever? I don't think so. Perhaps someone can chime in with the record week.

Folks wanted to experience them in the superior format?

Your point being? I was just highlighting that there were two behemoths that drove the big number. Then, the #3 title did only 7% of the #1 title.

Still, the $50 million this year would have been last year's $60 million. For two big titles like that, $50 million is rather modest, and it reflects the fact that Blu-ray is in double digit decline this year.

Are UHD Blu-rays expected for this holiday season?

I'm curious how the new format will play out. I think there's a 50/50 chance it will either carve out a niche (sort of like vinyl) or just fizzle out and go nowhere (sort of like SACD).

It depends on what they put out- I'd buy TONS of SACDs if there were tons of them that I wanted, but there aren't. Again, the issuing of 3D movies in 2D as initial titles is not a good sign.

FWIW, I was at my local Walmart today and they completely sold out of Age of Ultron. Not a single copy to be found in the store; it was priced at $22.98, too.

It's possible they never had it.

I went to the Walmart down the street since it's close and was told Friday morning only "select stores" would be getting the disc.

I assumed that was just code for the clerk being too lazy to go get it from the back but maybe there's some truth to it.
