My guess is he found some MKVs that were made from the official AVCHD ISOs, which have audio tracks removed in order for it to fit on a DVD-9.

I can admire the community for doing something like this, but I have to think that with the franchise out of George's hands, Disney will actually do right by these films. I can totally see a box set of Rogue One plus the unaltered original trilogy in 4K Bluray for the anniversary next spring.

Disney does seem to now own the digital rights to Episodes I-III, V and VI, since they're part of the "Disney Movies Anywhere" program, while Episode IV isn't:

I have to imagine Disney is working on a deal with Fox for Episode IV, but for now, Fox still owns distribution rights for at least Episode IV.

Why do we have to have this same argument everytime? I could guarantee you Fox would have jumped at the chance to release good versions of the original movies, the roadblock was always George.

If Disney tells Fox they want to release these discs, Fox will say "bring it on!" and we'll all win. Fox is not going to be stupid about this.

Nobody is suggesting the holdup is Fox. Fox would certainly jump at the chance for another Star Wars video release, especially considering how many times they've repackaged the current Blu-ray release.

The suggested holdup is Disney, which may want to wait until it owns the distribution rights for all, or at least the majority, of the titles on home video. It's the idea of them having to share revenue with Fox now, or waiting and getting to keep all, or at least much more, of the revenue later.

But doesn't Fox have the rights for ANH in perpetuity? Unless Disney can write a big enough check to Fox to change that, that particular issue is never going away so I don't see Disney missing the 40th anniversary next year.


I wish Disney would find a compromise, like let Fox have the rights to the SE trilogy (1997) version in exchange for the other rights to ANH and the rest.

Again, Disney may be working with Fox about ANH specifically. And even if Disney never buys ANH outright, "share just ANH revenue with Fox" is better than "share revenue from the first 6 films with Fox."

2020 is also the year Episode IX will be released on home video, so it marks a good time for another "Complete Saga" release of all the episodes.

I also don't necessarily see the 40th Anniversary being a huge marketing boost that Disney can't afford to miss out on. At this point they have a lot of new Star Wars films coming out, so capitalizing on the older films isn't as much a priority.

That's not going to happen. What's more likely is Disney acquiring distribution rights while giving Fox a revenue share for ANH, similar to what happened with the Marvel films when Disney bought them out from Paramount:

I can't imagine watching the original trilogy without the "20th Century Fox" opening title and theme. Every time I see it at the beginning of any movie I am immediately cued into thinking "Star Wars." I hope Disney is wise and retains that as part of the experience when these films are re-released in the future.

Reports say ILM just finished a brand new 4K remaster of A New Hope.

Most likely for the 40th anniversary of Star Wars. Celebration 2017 is in April so they might announce something there.

My questions:

1) what did they use to show the OT in theaters recently? An older 4k transfer?

2) Han shoots first and talks to Jabba in the 1997 ANH SE?

Officially? A 2K master of the altered version, likely the one currently on Blu-ray.

Now, there have been some secret screenings of 35mm prints, but those aren't officially authorized screenings.

No, in the 1997 SE, Greedo shooting first was added (previously, only Han shot), and the deleted scene of Han talking to Jabba was included with a CGI Jabba.

Disney still owns the story and characters, and Fox doesn't really have any license to fuck with it. That was always Lucas's call, and Fox released whatever he asked them to. One would assume that that creative license transferred from Lucas to Disney with the sale.

So Fox can release ANH as often as they like, but they can't mess with it creatively.

Disney can mess with it creatively, but they need Fox to distribute it, unless they come to some other agreement. I have to believe though that if Disney was willing to put up the money for a remaster and let Fox distribute it, Fox would be more than happy to do so under the current agreement.

That actually goes for all of the films produced by Lucas until 2020. Everything except the original film reverts to Disney then.
