Same reason the LOTR Trilogy didn't make a profit... according to New Line Cinema. Remember how Peter Jackson had to sue them to get money owed? And if I remember correctly, the Tolken estate did the same.

Also, Bluray.com has a pretty lengthy review up, pretty favorable.

re: Star Wars

"My biggest complaint is the frozen grain (typical of Lowry remasters) that pervades the early Tatooine scenes; it just hangs there in the sky, reacting only when something passes through it. It's not quite as laggy as some of the Lowry efforts I've seen, but the staccato movement of Threepio shuffling through the desert shows it up quite badly, akin to a force field following him around."

I don't know, that doesn't sound positive to me. I could expect that on some catalog title the studio didn't care about, but this is Star Wars. Oh wait... Nevermind.

Is that similar to the static grain in one shot of Priates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest? Cos that shot has always bothered the hell out of me (despite how ridiculously brief it is).

re: Star Wars

I was psyched about getting this today (even reorganized my schedule to go and pick it up) only to realize last night that it's a Friday release. Doh!

Seriously, WTF!? It isn't a Tuesday after a holiday, so why the damned Friday release?

I guess I'll run out and pick up Thor instead. At least it'll give me an excuse to get out of the office on Friday!

Didn't they re-do Han thawing in RotJ? Any shots of that floating around?

My friends in the UK got their set on Monday and have been watching all the goodies for two days already. But they didn't get the picture book packaging, and had blue plastic pages with trays instead.

I hope the Canadian set doesn't have bilingual French and English plastered all over the outside.

That's one of the things that always bugged the snot out of me. I always wondered why Lucas would F with things that should be left alone yet leave that horrible effect untouched.

Really looking forward to seeing what the new effect looks like.

What's so bad about the thawing shot? That's always looked fine, it was always the matte work in the Rancor fight and when Han and Lando are talking in front of the Falcon that looked bad in ROTJ.

It's funny - Dennis Muren talks about the carbonite scene in the commentary and mentions how the bright light coming from inside the carbonite block "makes absolutely no sense" and that "there's no logic to it," and here they are adding more light to it seven years later.

re: Star Wars

yeah, none of the new "fixes" ever really make much sense. as with a lot of you, the snowballing of the tweaks have finally broken the camel's back and i'm not going to be buying this set. they can keep their changes!

re: Star Wars

Even though I'm not thrilled with all the changes, I'm still looking forward to this set. Just to see it in full HD is going to be awesome. I do wonder if there's going to be other debates where folks prefer the original SE over the latest release. Seems like the original OT movies are a thing of the past that we'll never see released again

That scene always bothered me, even when I was a kid. It's an interesting visual, but all of the beams of light makes it look like Han Solo is glowing like Edward Cullen at a beach. Something in that scene is obviously giving off a lot of light; the beams imply that it's from inside, and the only thing in there is Han Solo.

Well, it looks like they've actually fixed that part - the light is now emanating from the edges of the carbonite burning away, rather than from Han like in the original. I'll admit it looks better...
