This article suggests that the BD will be cropped to 16:9 from the original 4:3 AR:

GODDAMMIT!! Best news of the year turns into the WORST news within a few microseconds.... Don't they realize that a 1974 niche series is going to be purchased by "those who care"!

Speak with your wallets, and REFUSE to buy this 16:9 cropped garbage! I can only hope this is a false rumor and that the series will be released in its OAR.

If not, well it is $100 saved and means that I will never purchase from Fremantle media again. This is a company that I once greatly respected for their fine encodes, and attention to detail.

Too late. It's already at the plants by now, I'm sure. Just don't buy it.

I haven't even opened my DVD version yet when it was on sale a few years back. Definitely keeping it.

I don't think anymore of the 2005 World At War sets are being printed. So yes, I think they will go OOP soon. But there are a lot of sets still in circulation.

Not that I would have bought this version anyway, as I already have the 2005 DVD set, and I don't plan on ever replacing my current DVDs with Blu, but with this news about the OAR...:wtf:

damn...we saw this in one of my film classes once....epic as fuck. Not in it's OAR..wow. I wasn't a fan of the 4:3 on it..but it WAS made in the 70s for TV. So...it had to be that way. I want the OAR..but..unless this bastard goes much cheaper...I ain't buying it...but oh...I so want it.

As soon as I heard about this cropping I picked up a dvd copy of this series.

I hope to god that other review sites don't follow the bluray.com review and give this such high ratings for PQ.

That site has moved over to my least-trusted list of online reviews.

I've got to agree that the BD.com review is not worth taking seriously He lost me when he wrote, "Would it have been better to have had this series in 1.33:1? Probably." Probably?!? No, definitely. Obviously, OAR is not a big deal for that reviewer despite him claiming that he preferred it early on.

This release is a travesty and an obvious cash-grab... The HD broadcasts can be and *are* a separate entity from the Blu-Ray release. They took the easy way out, and even admitted that the 1.33:1 re-mastering was done, and ready.

The blu-ray.com reviewer is, however, absolutely correct when he says no resolution is gained by zooming-in and re-framing a 1.33:1 16mm master for 1.78:1. What a pointless exercise by Fremantle. They bowed down to the HD broadcasters in a way that proves they know by whom their bread is buttered.

I wouldn't take this blu for free... and it's probably my favorite docu- series of the 1970s

I didn't read every word. I stopped after reading his lame-ass excuse for putting this blu ray out with a cropped image.
