I hope Coppola doesn't pull a Lucas with this release and only give us the Redux version.
I hope this comes out as a 3-disc set:
Disc 1: Original and Redux version with commentary.
Disc 2: George Hickenlooper's Heart of Darkness documentary.
Disc 3: Extras plus digital copy.

Yes, you are correct. I was remembering the original prints/home releases which had different color timing, but these were standardized in 2001, and are today found on The Complete Dossier:
"When Redux was being released, Storaro learned that a Technicolor Dye-Transfer Process was being brought back. The Dye-Transfer is a three-strip process, that makes the color highly saturated and has consistent black tone. Storaro wished to use this on Redux, but a problem was that in order to do it, they needed to cut the original prints of Apocalypse Now, leaving Apocalypse Now Redux the only print available. Storaro decided to do it, when convinced by Coppola that this version would be the one that would be remembered." - Wikipedia

I now have a new reason to hate Storaro.

Redux only = easy pass.
Both cuts of the film and I'll happily pick this up (despite the annoying and intrusive reframing). Otherwise forget it. I hated the Redux cut and will never own it again.

I had an old letterboxed VHS that was in the 2:35:1 ratio, and thought it looked much better. So did Last Emperor. and to mess with one of the great all time movies so the original version no longer exists? How could anyone let him do that?

I would save the hate until Lionsgate actually announces the disc. It was reported on Blu-ray.com that the film has gotten a completely new scan/transfer. With an all new transfer, anything is possible.
Even good things.

Naw. I bet Storaro realised his error in thinking that 2:1 is the future of digital cinema and will now crop all his movies to 1.78:1

Hopefully they get the framing right and utilize the full vertical potential of my TV. By simply rotating the film 90 degrees Mr. Storaro can really breathe life into his films with a whopping 1920p resolution so we don't lose any those precious details.

I picked up the Redux on DVD ages ago then never got around to watching it. Between the run time which was about 4 days and numerous comments online regarding the inferiority of the longer cut, i lost interest after i got it and eventually sold it.

Redux is definitely worth watching at least once if you enjoy the film, IMO. If just to see the extra footage, but the theatrical is definitely the better version. I wonder if any of the extras will be from the Circuit City bonus disc?

Probably. FYI, the extras from the CC bonus disc are the same extras that are present on the original theatrical cut release of the DVD.

it's still better to get the re-release, which as we all know, also includes the theatrical cut.
I'm going to cross my fingers that they include HOD as a bonus disc on the BD. I've got the DVD, and the 2 disc AN DVD, and would love to see all this shit put together and an elegant small box.

I def want this on BD, but I hope it'll have both cuts. Haven't seen Redux yet, but I'm generally not a big fan of revisionist cinema, so I want options.

All I want is the theatrical cut in it's theatrical aspect ratio in 1080p.

From The Digital Bits:
In "unofficial" release news today, here's something VERY cool for you Coppola fans. We've been hearing rumors about this for a while now from our industry sources, and some of you may be aware that director Francis Ford Coppola's American Zoetrope recently licensed a number of their catalog titles to Lionsgate. In fact, Lionsgate just a couple months ago released their own DVD version of Apocalypse Now: Redux. Well... we can confirm that the studio IS currently working on an ultimate Blu-ray release of Apocalypse Now. And from what we've heard, they are absolutely doing it right and including everything you'd want from an ultimate release of the film. (Note that a pre-order listing for just such a release appeared very briefly on Amazon.ca about a week ago, but was quickly pulled. It indicated the set would include BOTH cuts of the film AND the Hearts of Darkness documentary in the same package.) It's still a little early and nothing has been officially announced yet by the studio, so consider this info Rumor Mill worthy for the time being. But hopefully we'll be able to report more when we get back from the Con. Love that smell of napalm in the morning!
