I had a feeling that is probably the case, I just thought it was weird that they would still be unloading those. I thought by now they would have released them all.

It's weird seeing the care and effort that was put into the Showgirls Blu, and then these movies are being treated as almost an afterthought.

This better not be MPEG-2 on a BD-25, though I largely suspect that's exactly what we're getting.

No, it's an AVC encode on a dual-layer disc with 39mbps bitrate.

Fox also does the disc authoring, but MGM has to pay them for that service.

Fox is the distributor, but MGM still controls its own catalog and makes all decisions as to what gets released and how it will be released.

How are they able to keep working on this stuff if they're so deep in debt, then?
MGM has continued to receive loans and credit extensions that have kept them in business.

Good news! Where is your source for this info?

So, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK is a new encode?

Some folks over at AVS Forum have already gotten copies.

I spoke to another critic at a roundtable today who said he had it too, so I'm relieved to know it's still being released.

It isn't. I've read it's been delayed as well.

But WHY is it delayed? And when do they expect it to be released? Blu-Ray.com still has it scheduled coming out on their link "This Week on Blu-Ray", just posted.

I couldn't find a single online retailer that had Blood Simple.

Odd. Escape from New York arrives at DVDTalk's offices today for review, but Blood Simple didn't.

Blood Simple was delayed indefinitely. It was talked about earlier in the thread.

Has EFNY been delayed? I couldn't find it anywhere today.

It was released. But store like BB won't stock it (just like they aren't stocking the Roger Corman titles).

Someone posted screenshots of it on AVS. Some will probably complain that it is too soft, too dark, or both- but to me it looks fine- and appropriate for what a release like this from 1981 should and would have looked like. People may not like the way it looks (especially compared to something like Big Trouble In Little China), but it looks to me like MGM did exactly what they were supposed to do and didn't try to 'improve' it by imposing a more modern gamma level, color timing, or adding in a lot of EE to make it seem sharp.

I somehow missed that Escape From New York was out today (same with deep blue sea) but for $10 I'll be picking it up tomorrow.

ah yes...Canada.

A magical land where the stores actually stock catalog titles like this.

I'm aware. Still odd that one catalog release announced for August 3rd from MGM popped up, while another didn't.

I can't find Deep Blue Sea on Amazon. Was it really released yesterday?

Good point. The new Blu-ray just seems quite dark, but it looks on par with the screencaps of the DVD. I guess this is just a case of accepting the nature of the source print?

Did you open the fullsize shots or just look at the thumbnails? The UK disc is an upconvert that's dragged down by excessive, excessive edge enhancement and contrast boosting. (It's upconverted from PAL, though, so it does have a tiny bit more resolution than an upconverted NTSC DVD.) The US BD is a proper 1080p presentation.

I just looked at the screencaps on the page and didn't expand them to full size. I'll accept that any deficiencies in the picture are inherent to the original film presentation.

Re: BLOOD SIMPLE and ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK -- 8/3/10

If I had any doubts before, the DVDBeaver caps convinced me.

For the last 30 years (well, more like 27-28) people's impressions of this film have been shaped by video viewing of standard definition sources. I highly doubt this title was mastered for VHS and broadcast with the intention of being faithful and accurate to the source. Far more likely is that black levels were elevated, and the contrast boosted, to make the film read more clearly on small displays.

And that's the 'standard' that people are now measuring the Bd against.

And yes, I know that the HD Net feed was brighter- and while that may make it more pleasing to look at, it doesn't make it more correct. As Adam suggest, expand those caps on the Beaver site- it is all there in the image without any artificial sweetening. If you want brighter and more pop- jack up the settings on your display.

I would love to run out and buy this right now- but I can't. I would even pay close to pull retail for the privilege. But no. The studios love to use the excuse that catalogs don't sell- but how can they when not one B&M will stock it? Not Borders, Not Barnes & Noble, Not Best Buy, Not Wal-mart, Not Target...WTF do they expect.

The new Region A disc looks good to me. Cant wait for my order to arrive from Amazon and watch it again. Sucks about no extras though but nowadays w/ work and a kid on the way, I only have time for the movie and not so much for extras anymore :(
