Blu-ray is not really high def if you have pillarbox bars on the sides.

I saw a preview for the Gone With the Wind Blu-ray set and it had the pillarbox bars. Not really worth it to buy blu-ray in that case.

Re: Star Trek The Original Series Seasons 1-3 Blu-Ray

Jeff...

I'm chiming in as an owner of all three. GET THE BLU-RAY SET. The new effects are in HD and the video has been re-mastered, and yes, there are black bars on the side. It is a phenomenal set - the best part is that you can switch between new and old effects with the angle button on your remote while watching the episodes. The standard set has more discs (I believe) because they had to create duplicates of each episode with old and new effects.

Comments like that tend to turn threads here in a negative direction. Rather than harp on that, I will just point out that you are misinformed.

High definition really has nothing to do with the shape of the movie or show. The picture quality of the Blu-ray is vastly sharper and clearer than the DVD.

Why Don't the Black Bars Go Away?

BTW Josh, the way I solved the black bar "problem" was to reduce the ambient light in my media room so that only the projected image is visible. There is no discernible frame to be seen. Granted, not everyone can do this, but it is a "solution."

And Jeff, by your reasoning, any movie made before 1952 would be "unwatchable" by you, which would be a real shame. I have great flicks like Casablanca (1941), The Wizard of Oz (1939), and the Adventures of Robin Hood (1939) on blu-ray and they look phenomenal, not to mention they are some of the greatest films of all time!

Walmart has season 3 for $39.86 . Just received mine from them. $.97 shipping to home (free ship-to-store).

I have Season 1 (HDDVD) and Seasons 2&3 (Blu-Ray) now.

Didn't DVDTalkers call people like this "Joe Six Pack" for quite a few years?

Wow...GREAT DEAL! And their prices on seasons one and two aren't too shabby either.

Are these available in store as well?

Just ordered season 3 from them. I was only able to get season 1 from the best buy $40 a season deal. Now I am just waiting for season 2 to get cheaper somewhere.

This has black bars on the sides? Screw that, I'm gonna cancel the order I just placed.

Couldn't tell ya... I figured $.97 shipping straight to me was worth it. I've been watching season 1 on HDDVD and it's just amazing. They did a stellar job of enhancing (and not re-imagining) the effects shots (unlike Star Wars).

Wow, how can a DVD Talk "Senior Member" be so ignorant about DVDs and Blu-ray?

Can somebody please explain this to me? For YEARS members here have been all about OAR on movies/TV shows. Now we all (or most of us) have HD TVs there are people whining about NOT getting things in OAR? I would expect this from the Joe Six Pack crowd, not here.

yes, although back then it was when people bitched about black bars on top and bottom

back on track, is the blu ray set the "remastered" versions that had updated special effects?

Re: Star Trek The Original Series Seasons 1-3 Blu-Ray

You can choose between the original presentations or the remastered effects versions. I enjoyed watching both versions of all of the episodes...even with those black bars.

Re: Star Trek The Original Series Seasons 1-3 Blu-Ray

I checked Amazon and it looks like it is now OOP with some marketplace sellers offering it for $200+ when you could get it around $178-$180 a couple months ago.

They have this message posted

Item Under Review

While this item is available from other marketplace sellers on this page, it is not currently offered by Amazon.com because customers have told us there may be something wrong with our inventory of the item, the way we are shipping it, or the way it's described here. (Thanks for the tip!)

We're working to fix the problem as quickly as possible.

Are they coming out with a new version?

That seems to only apply to the three-pack. The individual seasons are still readily available.

To add to this, the three-pack is literally just the first three box sets shrinkwrapped together. They are otherwise identical to the separate releases.

Re: Star Trek The Original Series Seasons 1-3 Blu-Ray

Perhaps too many customers complained about loose discs during shipping? That was a big problem with these releases... those mini spindles just aren't reliable enough. Bend the case a little too much in one direction, and POP, off comes a disc. The series in its entirety is wonderful though. I've had no issues.

Season 2 is out of stock at Amazon and Season 1 has only copy remaining in stock so maybe there is a problem with the discs.

No, there isn't. They're available elsewhere. They're in print, they're fine, many of us have owned them since they came out. I don't know why you have a bug up your ass about these releases, but you need to let it go.
