Yup, I do! I have the last DVD set too. If I hadn't left it in Charleston, I could even have done a Laserdisc comparison, but that'd be overkill.

I may still get it if there are a lot of exclusive extras, as the free ticket to a movie I must see will offset most of the cost.

What a shame. It looks like quality control is becoming even more important now that we are in the high def era, where things are supposed to look nicer in the first place.

What sucks is when the QC process is essentially pulled out of the process when it come to the video side of things. It's all about disc behavior, however pointless it is.

So is there a release from another region that doesn't look like it was coated in vaseline but has a better encode than the 2008 release?

On the bright side, that's about twenty bucks I'll be saving.

I'll be lending Adam a copy of my Hi-8 version so his review can be as thorough as possible.

No... All Fox versions come from the same source tape, and they control all of the home video rights.

I'm really tempted to buy this just to see how bad it is - but don't want FOX to mistake that for support of them DNR'ing a movie to hell.

I think the original BD is worth having if you get it cheaply enough. It's still an upgrade over the DVD, and don't forget the lossless sound. It could be a long time before we get another version.

I'll admit it, I bought this one today. It is just $15 at Walmart and it comes with $10 in Hollywood Movie Money for either The A-Team, Knight and Day, or Predators.

Even with it available at that cheap a price, I'm just tempted to get the 2-Disc DVD instead, and maybe getting the first release to watch it in hi-def. As much as I was looking forward to this release hopefully getting Predator right...goddamn, they fucked up severely (although with the number of people that were bitching about "TOO MUCH GRAIN!!" on the last Blu-Ray, I'm honestly not surprised that Fox went this route)...

Boo-whooing aside. Picked this up at BB today for $15 (minus a whopping $.45 Bing cash back) and will give it a whirl. I'll probably end up Ebaying the movie cash like I normally do so should bring it down a few bucks. OK, continue the whining.

Re: Predator: Ultimate Hunter Edition -- June 29, 2010

I already used the movie cash to check out The A-Team.

This release certainly isn't the best it could be, far from it, but I'm happy with the deal I got.

Re: Predator: Ultimate Hunter Edition -- June 29, 2010

So I just watched the Ultimate Hunter Edition and here's my verdict:

I don't know why people are grading this blu-ray with one extreme to the next as if they just trying to fight each other. The video quality on this blu-ray is not: bad, fair, very good, excellent, or perfect. The video quality on this blu-ray is just good - simple as that. It certainly has the best video quality I've ever seen of this film. I didn't have the previous blu-ray but this new blu-ray just kills the previous dvd of this film. Sure, there is some wax effect in the close-up scenes sometimes, but not all the time. It's certainly not distracting as I was expecting after reading about everyone's complaints. But when the camera pulls back to medium shots and far shots, this is when the blu-ray shines. The majority of the film is made up of medium and far shots. The daylight scenes are also excellent. This movie doesn't look like a cartoon or characters looking like wax statues. It looks good enough for blu-ray and it looks certainly better then mediocre. If you love grain, then stick with the original blu-ray. If you don't love grain, buy the new blu-ray. If all you care about is the movie looking overall good on blu-ray, then buy the new blu-ray.

There are only really two bad video quality scenes on this blu-ray. I have no idea if that was the way it was originally done:
1. When Arnold first jumps into the waterfall
2. the mushroom cloud at the end of the film

Either way, for people that don't have the original blu-ray and you want to see PREDATORS, KNIGHT AND DAY, or A-TEAM in the theater, just buy this damn blu-ray from Best Buy so that all you are really paying for this PREDATOR blu-ray is 6 bucks. That's a pretty damn good deal for a perfectly acceptable blu-ray.

No, don't buy it at Best Buy unless the single release has movie cash, cause the collection set didn't have movie cash. I've been hearing Wal-Mart has movie cash. Unless I'm in the minority here or something.

I agree with you. The movie looks pretty good on blu-ray. The only scene that looks like wax is when Arnold is wearing that red t-shirt at the beginning (only the closeups). Other than that, it looks like a blu-ray transfer.

The scenes that you mentioned look bad were like that in the dvd release. I noticed one more when Mac is shooting at the jungle with the old painless, but it was like that on the dvd as well.

One thing that all blu-rays should have is a "Play All" feature on the extras, which this one does not.

So, if you are going to see Predators, buy this blu-ray.
