Just as an FYI, The Abyss just dropped on Hulu in 4k DV and it looks pretty damn good.

eta: It's the theatrical version.

Its now two weeks until release day for The Abyss, True Lies, and Aliens. It's hard to believe its finally here after so many years of the Abyss and True Lies not being available. Anyone know if all three of these movies will be available in store at Walmart or Target?

In theory, but they also dropped to $10 on iTunes almost immediately.

The reviews may have turned some people off.

What reviews? There are bad reviews already? I’m gonna have to pawn off my digital copies when the discs arrive.

Pixel peepers at the other site have been shitting on the digital releases since they came out. Like what else is new.

Well, if you can't see how bad True Lies looks then you need to take a trip to the ophthalmologist. Aliens is about 50/50 and the Abyss only has a couple of bad shots. True Lies is Terminator 2 bad.

The all do but compared to True Lies the other two aren't as bad. I watched the Aliens BD right after the VUDU ended and the BD will be my go to for now on. I am not buying any of the three on disc and will just suffer with the digtal copies I got for ten bucks for The Abyss and True Lies. True Lies looks so bad that I might not ever watch it again to be honest. Watching a film should not make you angry.

I didn't even get past the boardroom scene where they demote Ripley before turning it off and pulling out my BD. But your right, True Lies is worse.

If you really want to bang your head against a wall, go wander in the Columbia Classics thread and witness the argument about how money vs gift cards works.

I'm in no rush to get all of them. I'm going to hold out until all 3 drop below $20 like I did for Titanic.

The A.I. upscaling and DNR notwithstanding, how are the colors on Aliens? I have a hard time watching the Blu-ray given the almost total lack of any colors in it other than teal or orange. Does the new master walk that back any, or is it just as gaudy?

I can only imagine. It's no wonder I've never posted there. I'd be banned.

Re: Cameron Talks Avatar Redux, 3D, Titanic, Abyss/True Lies Blu-ray

I've seen what the remastered version of True Lies will look like from watching it on both Youtube and Tubi. Outside of Cameron's famous "blue tint" in some scenes I thought it looked fine. I have the Spanish bootleg and when I bought that blu-ray I said to myself I'd buy this new 4k once it was announced. I also don't think you can really judge how these movies will look until you're actually watching the physical media copies. With that said Im going to have to buy these movies one at a time due to limited funds and really excited as I'll be buying The Abyss first. I have been waiting to watch it again since i saw it in theaters this past December for the first time.

It's well known that streaming services can affect visual quality, we really need to wait for the disc reviews before complaining. I'm positive there will be differences.

The copy of True Lies that had previously made the rounds on various streamers including YouTube, Tubi, MGM+, Paramount+, and Apple TV+ came from an older HD master, the one that originated with the D-VHS release in the early 2000s. The current digital version and upcoming 4K UHD come from a new transfer remastered by an A.I. algorithm at James Cameron's direction.

Better compression and a higher bitrate on a physical disc isn't going to change the fact that these (True Lies specifically) were subjected to some sort of horrifying AI processing. I completely understand wanting to wait and see for one's own self, but these are what they are.

If anything, scrubbing/AI processing would probably look worse on a 4K UHD disc than streaming because of the better image quality.

Lots of sites reporting they're getting their copies in now. HDD says their reviews will go up Monday morning.
