Leave it to Cameron to wait all this time to get proper copies out but destroy them first with the AI garbage.

Ironic, isn't it, that the man who launched a major franchise of movies about the dangers A.I. pose to humanity would now rely on it to make substantive alternations to his old work?

I suppose we should expect the eventual 4K edition of The Terminator to be re-edited to imply that the T-800 was actually the hero and Sarah Connor was the master villain who caused the apocalypse all along.

Not sure if this was mentioned but I just noticed True Lies is listed on Apple TV in 4K for $19.99. As of 12/12/23 according to Cheap Charts.
Looks like my HD version was upgraded.
Edit: same for the Abyss (except I don’t own and Showing as 4k in iTunes)

I haven’t been keeping up, but they are phasing out the iTunes store. I only see it as (owned) HD in there.

Supposedly Terminator 4K is up next... but based off these new releases it's going to be AI'd to hell too.

Im not passing judgement on the 4K transfers of True Lies, The Abyss, and Aliens until I have the 4k discs in my hands in March.

That's fair, but I can't recall the last digital release that wasn't very reflective of the physical media that followed it a month or so later.

Now I'm picturing people tearfully screaming "I order you not to go!" as their current digital copies get lowered into a vat of molten steel and get turned into the new versions.

The 4K discs probably won’t be that cheap for a long time. But I’ve waited years to get a good copy of them and I want to support the discs. I might just stick with waiting for the discs.

I just went with True Lies. Aliens and Abyss still do not have the Special Editions uniformly in 4K/DV/Atmos.

Apparently The Abyss won't be getting a 4k release in the UK. Its all because British Censors wanted the Rat breathing underwater scene cut. Disney said yes but Lightstorm vetoed the cut so now the UK release is cancelled. Strange that scene would need to be cut but if you live in the UK you'll have to import the 4k disc. Strange.

The UK has very strict laws regarding animal cruelty in tv/movies. The cuts are mandatory if they believe the animal was harmed in any way.

Something's gone wacky on iTunes with the 4K digital release of The Abyss. As of today it's been downgraded to HD only. The artwork changed...now says "Special Edition" on the top.

MA/Vudu still show it in 4K. True Lies and Aliens both are still 4K on iTunes.

Wasn't the rat fake during the actual breathing fluid portion of the sequence?

Is it thou? iTunes listing for this has changed almost daily.

After I posted that, the next day it was back at 4K with a runtime of 2:20 but still had the ‘special edition’ label on the artwork. Just looked again and now the runtime is 2:51 but if you preview the iTunes Extras it shows the special edition as an option.

Does anyone have it on iTunes and can confirm the special edition extra is 4K/DV?

It was actually real, unsimulated. IIRC, it was covered in the aforementioned "Under Pressure" documentary.

It is and it's funky. I bought it and the option that is listed as the special edition plays back in HD/5.1. If you click on the first option that just says "play" it still is the special edition in full 4K/DV/Atmos. I basically have two versions of the special edition - one in 4K/DV/Atmos and one in HD/5.1 & all of the bonus features.

Wow. I am surprised they were allowed to film that, regardless of the experts advising them.

That explains this shit. Wow.

Saw this today. There are pluses and minuses. But I'd have to see it in motion.

True Lies is currently on Tubi and it appears to be the remastered version. I think it looks very good.

That motorcycle jump around 11:05. Yikes. And so many of the shots seem . . . colder looking now. Almost makes me want to get that older Blu-ray regardless of how it came to be. Otherwise, I can possibly still live with this new version of I get it cheap enough down the road. It’s not like there will be much choice, really.
