I haven't seen the Abyss since I bought the original non-anamorphic DVD back in the day. I'd be down for a 4k to watch with my kids.

My guess would be A) the JLC strip scene is viewed as awkward at best in this day and age and B) the main villain is pretty much a stereotypical Islamic terrorist caricature.

I’m not saying I think that but I could see how many would. I just watched this for the first time in a long time and I forgot how much fun it is. Really one of the best action films of the 90s IMO. Glad I took a chance on disc with the red case.

Bill Hunt states he checked with some industry people The Abyss (and Tombstone) will NOT be released this year, but 2023. Abyss to coincide with Avatar 2 and Tombstone since it’s the 30th Anniversary.

Avatar 2 comes out this year though. So would that be very early 2023 then? Dec. 2022 would be more likely if that’s what they want to do.

My guess is Abyss physical release at the same time as the Avatar 2 home release. I just hope the digital is available sometime much sooner.

I believe the story is that Cameron said he couldn't look at True Lies again after 9/11 happened.

I saw some talk that a Titanic UHD disc may be coming this summer as well.

It’s the 25th Anniversary for Titanic. If the don’t do a release for that they’re fools.

i hope we get both versions remastered on The Abyss. i'd really only watch the extended, but they have to include both.

At this point, I'll settle for one version. Either version is fine.

So, in order to get True Lies, do we have to hope Avatar 3 is a spy thriller?

Hope it’s as good a restoration as T2.

True Lies is currently on Peacock. It was on Hulu. I started watching it last night and the transfer is horrible. Also the aspect ratio is fucked up. The screen looks squished.

Looks to be the non-anamorphic letterbox DVD upconverted to 1080p without accounting for the aspect ratio issue. In addition to the AR, the picture is definitely poor SD quality, with bad colors and a ton of edge enhancement. Very, very ugly. Unwatchable, even.

Hilariously, the movie starts with a "This film has been modified to fit your screen" disclaimer, and then looks like this!

Yup, exactly. I watched it last year when it was on Prime Video, and it was fine, using the existing HD master that's out there. I wonder where Peacock went so wrong.

Well I founded a region free True Lies bluray imported from Spain for sale on Ebay. The packaging is in Spanish but has an English audio track so I took a chance and decided to buy it. It should arrive on Friday.

That's a bootleg. I mentioned it earlier in this thread. It was apparently recorded off an HD telecast internationally. There are no legal HD copies on physical media anywhere in the world.

Well it didn't cost much so I'm not out a lot if it sucks.
