FYI, True Lies is streaming for free and in HD on The Roku channel.
It's ad supported so there will be commercial breaks.
Since this movie is literally in Blu-Ray and Digital HD purgatory, this is probably going to be the only way to see it in full legally anytime soon.

The Abyss -- 4K UHD remaster -- News and Rumors

If you're wondering who the hell this guy is. He's the colorist for Alita Battle Angel and Avatar. So he's worked with Cameron. So this is a promising update.

I'm just being salty, hence the
I hope you're right. I want this as much as anyone here. If I had to guess, based on zero real knowledge mind you, IF this really happens, it'll get a theatrical re-release first for a week or two, and then on disc a little bit later. I would prefer that happens sooner than later... but we all know how Cameron has delayed shit for this film (and True Lies) for so damn long now.

Oh shit, this August is the 30th anniversary of The Abyss. I think it makes sense now. It will get one of those Fathom Events releases and then maybe will get a disc release.

come on now. True Lies: 5-Star Collection came out right on time. This will probably come out with the same timeliness.
The Abyss is probably my favorite James Cameron movie. Seeing as how I haven’t gone 4K yet, I assume this will skip blu-ray and go straight to 4K just to screw me.

No 4K release comes with just a 4K disc. It will have a Blu-Ray as well.

I haven't watched this since I had the old non-anamorphic DVD version, and I sold that when rumors of an upgrade were going around. And the thing is, I haven't really *wanted* to watch it.
I enjoyed it back in the day, but I wonder if it has held up?

Re: The Abyss -- 4K UHD remaster -- News and Rumors
I recorded a few HD TV broadcasts of the last couple of years and the good news is the AV quality is pretty good.
Unfortunately, the movie doesn't hold up any better now than when it was first released.
IMO, it's the least of Cameron's creations.

If they skip blu-ray and go straight to 4K, at least I'll have my SE DVD to watch. I won't be going 4K anytime soon, if at all. Hell, I had to twist my arm for years just to go blu-ray.

Re: The Abyss -- 4K UHD remaster -- News and Rumors
Of course... I have a handful of 4K releases that don't have Blu-rays with them... but they're imports from other countries. In the US, I can't think of a single release that doesn't have both discs.
As for the existing HD version... there's a copy floating around out there of the SE but "cleaned up" a bit by a fan. I can't remember what that entails, and I have yet to watch it... maybe I'll do that this week.

This pretty much says it all.
I watched it and thought the AV was pretty good.
Unfortunately, even after all these years, the movie still doesn't hold together well.

I started out watching the theatrical cut and it was awesome. Then the director's cut came out and it was even more awesome. I prefer the DC version.
